Scan Laundry Care Symbols with Your iPhone to See How You're Actually Supposed to Wash Clothes - Gadget Hacks

laundry.indah.link

When it comes to washing clothes, the laundry symbols on your tags might as well be hieroglyphics. They're difficult to interpret, easy to forget, and even easier to ignore. But if you don't want to ruin expensive designer clothes, blankets, and other fiber-based materials, you need to figure out the meaning behind those tiny icons. Thankfully, your iPhone can help out.

While you can buy posters of laundry symbol meanings, keep them bookmarked in your browser, or google them every time you need to wash, dry, or iron something without legible English text-based instructions, it's easier to use the camera on your iPhone to scan all the laundry codes at once. Once you do, you'll get directions on how to do everything depicted on the tag.

*

Apple doesn't have a built-in laundry symbol decipherer in its Camera like it does a QR code reader, so you'll have to use a third-party app. The app we're using can also be implemented into a shortcut that you can activate with Siri or via the Shortcuts widget. Plus, you can even make your iPhone read out the instructions to you so you can start looking at all of your other clothing care labels.

Using the Laundry Lens App for iPhone

Install Laundry Lens, created by developer Alan Pegoli, from the App Store in iOS 13 or later. Once you open it, it's pretty self-explanatory. Give it access to the Camera, then scan a set of symbols on a care label. It'll search its database of over 70 different laundry care icons, then lets you see their meanings in easy-to-understand print. You can also search for symbols by their description.

Step 1: Add the Scan Laundry Symbols Shortcut

With a shortcut, you can have a home screen icon or even a widget to scan the laundry symbols even quicker than the app itself. Plus, it also uses Siri to dictate the laundry symbols back to you, so you don't even need to read anything to learn how to wash and dry your clothes properly.

Download Scan Laundry Symbols, the shortcut created by the same developer of Laundry Lens. After opening its link, it should direct you to the Shortcuts app, but if it doesn't, tap "Get Shortcut" in Safari.

In Shortcuts, you can view more details about the shortcut's workflow. Tap "Add Untrusted Shortcut" at the bottom to add it to your library. If you run into issues, go to Settings –> Shortcuts, then make sure "Allow Untrusted Shortcuts" is toggled on.

Step 2: Use the Shortcut to Scan Care Labels

As long as you have the Laundry Lens app installed, the shortcut is ready to go. To test it out, tap on the shortcut from your "My Shortcuts" library in Shortcuts. The first time you use the shortcut, it will ask for access to your camera. Tap "OK" to continue.

With the Camera now open, place the care label and laundry symbols in focus and snap a picture. Use good lighting and keep a steady hand, or the shortcut won't recognize all of the laundry icons. If you need to, tap "Retake" to try again. Once you're happy with your photo, tap on "Use Photo." The first time you use the shortcut, it will ask for access to the Laundry Lens app. Tap "OK" to continue.

After a few seconds, the shortcut will recognize the symbols, and Siri will speak the instructions out loud. It will say things like "Do not wash" or "Do not tumble dry" or whatever the shortcut interpreted all of the icons as. Once it's done speaking, the written instructions will appear as a pop-up. Hit "Done" when you're finished.

Step 3: Add a Home Screen Icon for Easier Access (Optional)

If you're going to use the shortcut often, you should add a home screen icon to bring it up quickly. To do so, tap the ellipsis (•••) icon on Scan Laundry Symbols in the Shortcuts app. When the editor pops up, tap the ellipsis (•••) icon again.

Next, tap on "Add Home Screen" to view what the home screen icon will be. You can touch its icon under Home Screen Name and Icon if you want to change it to something else, and you can rename it as well. Once satisfied, tap on "Add" to add the shortcut to your home screen as an app icon, then hit "Done" to finish.

Step 4: Or Add the Shortcuts Widget Instead (Optional)

You can also access the shortcut from the Shortcuts widget. In iOS 13, you can long-press the Shortcut app's icon on the home screen to see it and a few of your shortcuts, and you can make the laundry code scanner one of them. Then, you can just tap it from the quick actions widget. You could also add it to the Today View for easy access from the home or lock screen.

If you're running iOS 14, you can add the Shortcuts widget to your home screen or Today View, and it comes in different sizes. Once you add it, the laundry tag scanner should appear in the list, but you may need to make a folder in Shortcuts just for what appears in the widget, then edit the widget to use only that folder instead of anticipating which shortcut you want to use.

The home screen widget in iOS 13 (left) vs. iOS 14 (right).

Step 5: Speed Up Shortcut for Better Use (Optional)

If you prefer reading the instructions versus listening to them, you can have the directions pop up immediately instead of after Siri is done describing everything. To do so, tap the ellipsis (•••) icon on Scan Laundry Symbols in the Shortcuts app to open the editor. Next, scroll down until you find the Document action for "Speak Instructions." Tap "Show More" on it, then toggle of the switch next to "Wait Until Finished." Hit "Done" to save the shortcut.

Tips for line drying your laundry from Maine's homesteaders - Bangor Daily News

laundry.indah.link

Line drying is a great way to save energy and make your laundry routine a little greener. Plus, there is nothing quite like the smell of sun-dried sheets or the sight of them flapping in the wind. Maine may not seem like an ideal place to line dry clothing because of the humidity and the icy winters, but Mainers have found a way.

“You don’t need bleach if you line dry, and your linens have the best smell,” said Natalie Allen from Midcoast Maine. “Watching a line full of white sheets snap in the wind on a sunny summer day is one of the most beautiful chores. Drying outside is economical, environmentally friendly as well as just plain satisfying.”

Here’s what you need to know to start line drying.

Setting up for line drying

If you are interested in line drying for yourself, the first thing you need to do is set up your apparatus. It can be as simple as two stakes in the ground with lines strung between them.

“I would probably recommend materials that are weather resistant — so, pressure treated wood, and a plastic-coated rope so it doesn’t grow mold from uncoated rope being out in the rain and heat,” said Morgan Harper in Berwick. “Don’t want that on your clean clothes!”

If you aren’t able to set up stakes, Allen said she is always on the lookout for a nice straight branch with a crook in it. Allen added that having a sturdy, notched pole on hand to help with line sag or to lift sheets a few extra inches off the ground is a must.

Choosing a good location for your line drying apparatus is also important. Harper, for example, recommended that you don’t put it next to a duck or chicken coop, or under a tree where it might get covered in bird poop or other critters.

Line drying is not exclusively done outdoors, either. Kari Pfister, who lives near Bangor, said that she line-dries clothes in her upstairs loft.

“It works out well for us,” Pfister said. “In the winter, the wood stove makes them dry quickly. We just strung a line of paracord through some eyelets and it holds even the heaviest of our bedding just fine.”

Allen said that sometimes, she will line dry in her basement, using both lines and a folding rack.

“My dry basement has lines crisscrossing the ceiling,” Allen said. “Make sure you leave plenty of space for good airflow. Running a fan helps to keep the air from getting musty. We sometimes keep a rack in front of the wood stove for extra damp items.”

Not every item needs to be line dried, either. Even Mainers who love line drying will leave certain things to an electric clothes dryer.

“We have found that jeans and bath towels, for our preference, come out a bit too stiff on the line so we use our machine dryer for those,” Harper said.

To combat stiffness, you can also run a little bit of fabric softener or even a splash of white vinegar in with the wash before line drying.

Line drying in the winter

Most Mainers stick to drying clothing on the line during the warmer months — spring, summer and even early fall. On humid days, some will move their laundry inside, or pop them in the dryer for a shorter amount of time after allowing them to hang dry.

However, some Mainers also line dry well into the winter.

You can still line dry your clothes in the winter. Credit: Courtesy of Jj Starwalker

Jj Starwalker, a homesteader based in Corinth, said she will wait for “good drying days” in the winter, which she defines as having no precipitation and a bit of wind and sun.

“It is not necessary for it to be above freezing. Just hang quickly! The breeze and the sublimation of the water from the laundry to the air will make them relax as they dry,” Starwalker said.

Starwalker said she also hangs her clothes strategically in the winter, offering plenty of space between items, staggering the placement on my four lines and hanging in such a way that maximum surface area is exposed for maximum drying potential.

“For example, this time of year, washcloths and cleaning rags are hung by a corner with one pin,” Starwalker said. “In the winter, each gets spread out, with two pins. Often even in the winter everything will get dry; [the] possible exceptions are heavy, lined jeans and sweats.”

Whatever doesn’t dry, Starwalker said she will hang on wooden racks indoors until they do.

Even if you are line drying in the spring or summer, though, choosing a good drying day is important.

“I prefer to do it on days with less humidity than we have been receiving lately,” Harper said. “A slight breeze is preferable.”

How browntail moths can impact line drying

Mainers who want to line dry their clothes have a new problem to face: browntail moths, whose itch-inducing caterpillars crawl onto laundry lines or drop from trees on clothing, sheets and other drying fabrics as they flutter in the wind.

“I’ve stopped line drying because of the browntail moths and the itching it causes,” Becky Choate from South Gardiner said. “I do feel like we have fewer moths this year than the last two summers, which is encouraging.”

Alexis Zimba from Saint George said that when she was pregnant, she got a browntail moth rash on her stomach that she blamed on a line-dried t-shirt that mingled with a moth. She said that location is important if you want to avoid browntail moths.

“[I] never line dried clothes again at that spot, and didn’t get re-exposed to the rash,” Zimba said. “Our clothes line was tied to a tree at one end, so that may have contributed, but still, I wouldn’t risk it now, other than on an enclosed sun porch or something.”

If you live in an area plagued with browntail moths, Choate added that strategically choosing what you line dry may help.

“I’m still only putting outer blankets on the line — nothing that touches our skin,” she said.

A  child was airlifted to Riley Children's Hospital Wednesday after an accident in which a vehicle crashed into a Garden Quarter Apartment laundry facility, according to the Vigo County Sheriff's Office.

The vehicle hit and entered into the building, pinning a boy who was inside. Honey Creek Fire and Vigo County Sheriff deputies as well as civilians helped free the victim. The 10-year-old boy was airlifted to Riley Hospital for a severe leg injury.

Masoud Mahini, age 66, told investigators he has a medical condition and was unsure if he was braking or accelerating his SUV as he pulled up to the laundromat at 1200 E. Elmwood.

Alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

Keys to Properly Sizing Laundry Equipment - American Laundry News

laundry.indah.link

OSHKOSH, Wis. — All industrial, commercial and on-premises laundries process different items, utilize different pieces of equipment, strive toward unique quality goals and operate at varying levels of efficiency.

When it comes to purchasing new equipment or replacing old equipment, proper sizing is critical. Before you do anything, reach out to your equipment distributor and begin a dialogue.

The best way to properly size a laundry, and its equipment, is through back-and-forth conversations on the type and number of items being laundered, the laundry’s hours of operation, labor required, space available and ownership costs.

By considering all the variables, you’ll select the best equipment to suit your needs, now and into the future.

STEP 1: COUNT EACH PIECE OF LINEN

Laundries have their own unique inventory of items with specific weights, profiles and dimensions. Determine the laundry’s piece count in each category, such as king sheets, duvets, towels, etc. Then multiply the number of pieces by weight for total laundry volume.

STEP 2: DETERMINE HOURLY WASH CAPACITY

Divide total laundry volume by hours per week of operation.

Girbau Industrial distributors are able to calculate hourly wash capacity, time on task, utility and labor costs. This information flows into recommendations for washing/drying, ironing and folding equipment, as well as production workflow.

STEP 3: EVALUATE COST OF EQUIPMENT OWNERSHIP

You’ve narrowed down your needs and know your equipment options. Now evaluate the cost to own those pieces of equipment in terms of labor and efficiency.

Keep in mind the most expensive part of laundry room is its labor. So while you’re planning, see how you might minimize labor in the laundry. You can do this in a number of ways, including:

  1. Over equip the laundry’s wash capacity to produce more in less time.
  2. Increase the laundry’s linen par. If you have a linen inventory buffer, you can run fewer hours per week and it costs you less over time.
  3. Add automation. If you have the laundry volume to justify it, go with automation every time!

STEP 4: JUSTIFY THE AUTOMATION

Any time you purchase new equipment, you need to justify it. The same holds true for automation. Consider these guidelines:

All-in-One Flatwork Finisher—When a laundry processes between 180 and 260 washing pounds per hour, it might be time for an all-in-one flatwork finisher that automatically irons, folds and stacks.

An all-in-one eliminates almost all hands-on flatwork folding and stacking. An all-in-one machine has the capability to process (iron, fold and stack) up to 180-plus sheets per hour with a single operator.

Towel Folder—Laundries processing 250-500-plus laundry pounds per hour should consider adding a towel folder.

Generally, a typical laundry operator can sort, fold and stack different-sized towels at a rate of 120 pieces per hour. By adding an automatic towel folder, a laundry can fold and stack at least 800 different-sized pieces per hour, with just one operator.

So remember, all laundries process different items and there are a number of variables to consider. Sizing the laundry properly is critical for the laundry to meet their production and efficiency goals now and into the future.

Reach out to your local distributor for assistance. They will provide their expertise and guide you along the way. Your distributor is your partner before, during and after the sale.

Laundry Stripping, Explained, How-To & Details | Moms.com - Moms

laundry.indah.link

If you're obsessed with clean clothes, the fresh smell of clean laundry, and the soft feeling of your bath towel or fuzzy robe, you may want to pay special attention to just how clean these items are. Laundry stripping is a technique that has been around for a while, but this interesting way of removing built up grime from your clothing is really surging in popularity right now as one of the very best laundry hacks.  It's shocking, it's gross... and it's really effective!

Let's face it, if you have children, you're doing a lot of laundry, and most people assume that putting clothing through the laundry machine and adding some detergent is going to get out all the dirt. The evidence is in that grossly discolored water that your washing machine spews out, right?  Wrong. It's really not all out of your clothes at all, and that's about to be proven.

Continue scrolling to keep reading Click the button below to start this article in quick view.

Shockingly, our clothes tend to retain a lot of the residue from soaps, detergents, and dryer sheets, and as much as we hate to admit it, much of what we're wearing and snuggling into is actually quite dirty. Just an hour into the laundry stripping process will give you all the evidence you need, and you'll soon become a firm believer in the laundry stripping process!

What Precisely Is Laundry Stripping?

Via: Pixabay: StevePb

According to Real Simple, " laundry stripping is a method of washing that aims to remove detergent residue, especially from homemade laundry soap, fabric softener, minerals from hard water, and body oils that have collected on your laundry over time."

advertising

The actual process is very simple to execute, but the wait time is a lengthy one, as the clothing has to soak for several hours to properly extract all the gunk from your clothing.

RELATED: The Pros & Cons Of Hang Drying Your Laundry Outside

Laundry Stripping, Simplified

You won't believe how easy it is to do this, and you'll be strangely addicted to seeing the gross stuff that comes out of your clothing.

The ingredient list is very simple, and consists of just 3 items.

To properly strip your laundry, you'll need borax, washing soda, and laundry detergent. That's it!

The next step is to select the items of clothing that you want to strip. It's important to be careful about your selections. You won't want to put a black item in with a white sock, as there may be some dye that comes off the clothing. Basic laundry rules apply here, so group your clothing items accordingly.

Step-By-Step Stripping Guide

Via: Pixabay: Stevepb

To get started in your laundry stripping adventures, simply plug the drain of your tub and let the very, very hot water fill the tub at least 3/4 of the way. Presuming you're going to strip one full load of laundry, Real Simple suggests you proceed to add 1/4 cup of borax, 1/4 cup of washing soda, and 1/2 cup of laundry detergent. It's important to let this mixture dissolve before adding any articles of clothing.

Launder your clothes as you would normally, then take your clean clothes (it doesn't matter if they are wet or dry), and put them into the tub that you've already filled with the hot water and ingredient mixture. Oh, and get your camera ready, you'll want to capture these before and after shots!

advertising

Feel free to check on your laundry concoction once in a while and stir it up, but don't say we didn't warn you. You're about to be viewing some very murky waters!

The Final Laundry Stripping Steps

After roughly 4 hours, or when the water in the tub has full cooled, your laundry is officially stripped. What you are about to discover is an absolute game changer, and you'll never quite view your clothes the same way again. Your tub will undoubtedly be full of really brown, very gross, incredibly dirty water. It's horrifying to think that all of this came out of your already-laundered, assumed-to-be clean clothing!

The sight of the horrifyingly dirty water may take your breath away for all the wrong reasons, but don't get too caught up in the staring process... you have a few more steps to go before your laundry stripping mission is officially complete!

advertising

You'll need to hand-wring all the water out of each item, as the idea, of course, is not to let your laundry absorb this gross, murky water after all this work! Once the laundry is wrung out, you should put it through the washing cycle on a water-only cycle - don't add any laundry detergent this time!

What NOT To Strip

Delicates
Via: Pixabay: Chuanway

Laundry stripping is essentially an extension of regular laundering of your clothes, and  the same care and consideration must be taken when deciding which articles of clothing you're going to strip. Towels and frequently worn clothing items seem to be popular choices, as are bed sheets and pajamas.

advertising

However, you'll want to skip the really delicate items entirely. If the clothing labels indicate that your items cannot be washed in hot water, or if they should be run in the 'delicate' cycle, or are a sensitive, fragile fabric, they shouldn't be thrown into this mix at all.

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A street-based outreach team in Lansing is looking for volunteers. That’s because is just a few days, the group is hosting a free laundry event for the community.

6 News is here for you with how you can get involved and where you need to be to benefit from what else they have to offer.

“We always love to see good things happen in the community,” said All Washed Up Coin Laundry Owner Brian Singleton.

Sat. Aug. 1 Cardboard Prophets is taking over All Washed Up for the laundry project.

Singleton said, “All the washers and dryers will be free. We’re allowing each participant to have 80 pounds of laundry.”

Sanitation stations and masks are also being provided.

“We’re gonna allow about 13 people in at time to make sure we have social distancing,” Singleton said.

In order to make this event successful they need volunteers.

“We always welcome our volunteers,” Singleton said. “We keep track of the washers and dryers they use so that the participants of the laundry don’t get separated. We don’t want any lost wash.”

Quarters, laundry detergent, bleach and dryer sheets are also needed, but Saturday isn’t just about getting your laundry done.

The vulnerability project is coming to help identify those suffering from food insecurity. Cross Road BBQ will have an information table about job opportunities, and there will also be a free store and haircuts.

Mason Community Church as well as Mason United Methodist Sponsors will be putting on the free Store.

Clean and gently used summer clothes will also be accepted. Tents that are either new or in good repair are also needed.

“Laundry isn’t an option, it’s a health requirement and we love to be part of a community that’s growing, that’s prospering and to get out citizens the clean clothes they require to be very productive in the workforce,” Singleton said.

The event is from 10 A.M. until 2:00 P.M.

You’re asked to message Linda Verhine Karl on Facebook if you would like to donate or volunteer. If your volunteering on Saturday, you’re asked to please be there by 9:00 A.M. for training and set up.

Laundry Stripping Is the Summer Trend We Totally Didn’t See Coming - Yahoo Lifestyle

laundry.indah.link

There’s no denying that we owe social media (such as Instagram, Twitter and TikTok) for teaching us some of the most useful life-hacks we’ve ever seen. Especially, during this lockdown.

And now, we’ve been introduced to the latest TikTok trend—laundry stripping. Also known as strip washing, the increasingly popular cleaning method has become a go-to for many who are seeking to revive laundry (we’re looking at you stained-and-no-longer-crisp linens).

But what exactly is laundry stripping? And how does it work? We’re breaking down everything you need to know about this “new,” aesthetically pleasing cleaning trend.

What is Laundry stripping?

Essentially, it’s a method of washing that aims to strip (get it?) detergent and other residues left by fabric softener, minerals and body oils that have accumulated over time. The method is usually performed by simply soaking the laundry in hot water and cleaning solution in a bathtub and takes a few hours to complete.

What has really caught the attention on social media is the murky brown water that laundry stripping leaves behind.

How do you do it?

All you really need is detergent, borax and sodium carbonate. Start by washing your laundry as you usually would. Fill a bathtub (you can also opt to use a large bucket or even a washing machine that opens from above) with hot water and a mixture of the three ingredients we mentioned. Once dissolved, add your laundry (wet or dry) and let it soak for up to four hours. Finally, run the load through another cycle (water only) in the machine and voilĂĄ.

What should you strip wash?

While strip washing is common for things like linens and towels, it's not recommended for everything. For example, when performed on clothing, the method has often caused bright colors to run.

If you do decide to try it, just make sure you document it for the rest of the world to see.

Recipe: The French Laundry’s Gazpacho - San Antonio Express-News

laundry.indah.link

Despite The French Laundry’s reputation for famously elaborate food, this refreshing soup is a breeze to make at home.

1 cup chopped red onions

1 cup chopped green bell pepper

1 cup chopped English cucumber

1 cup peeled tomatoes, chopped

1 1/2 teaspoons chopped garlic

1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt

1/4 teaspoon cayenne

1/4 cup tomato paste

1 tablespoon white wine vinegar

1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

3 cups tomato juice

Sprig of thyme

2 cups balsamic vinegar

Instructions: Mix all the ingredients except the balsamic vinegar together in a bowl or other container, cover, and let sit in the refrigerator overnight.

The next day, remove the thyme and blend all the ingredients in a blender until the gazpacho is smooth. You will have about 2 quarts. For a smoother texture, strain the soup to yield about 1 quart. Refrigerate the gazpacho until ready to serve.

Heat the vinegar in a heavy saucepan over medium heat until steam rises from the liquid. Place the saucepan on a heat diffuser and let the liquid reduce very slowly (it shouldn’t simmer) for 2-3 hours, until it has reduced and thickened to a syrupy glaze. There should be approximately 1 cup of glaze. Keep the glaze in a squeeze bottle at room temperature for garnishing. If the glaze is too thick, warm the bottle in hot water to loosen the glaze.

To serve, ladle the cold soup into bowls and squeeze dots of balsamic glaze over the top.

Makes 8 servings

Travel to Napa Valley from your kitchen with dishes from French Laundry, Model Bakery, Joseph Phelps Vineyards and more - San Antonio Express-News

Some of America’s best restaurants are dotted throughout the rocky hills of California’s Napa Valley. From the unrivaled culinary bastion The French Laundry to celebrated kitchens tucked away on sprawling vineyard estates, the region’s eateries are known for marrying old world recipes and techniques with California’s broad array of ingredients to form one of the country’s most distinctive dining regions.

Sounds delicious — but it’s unlikely many of us will be traveling there during the COVID-19 outbreak. Fortunately, the virus can’t keep us out of those wine country kitchens in spirit.

This week we present the third installment in our four-week Summer Kitchen Travels series with a stop in some of Napa Valley’s best known restaurants, bars and wineries. This trip comes on the heels of visits to New Orleans and Miami, and we’ll close the series out next week with a culinary adventure through New England’s renowned establishments.

The Napa Valley American Viticultural Area is famous for a Mediterranean climate and geology perfect for growing some of the world’s best grapes. That Mediterranean flair is extended to many restaurant menus across the region, with heavy influences from France, Italy, Spain and other countries.

Our first taste of that comes from the famed restaurant The French Laundry, which has held three Michelin stars since 2006 under the leadership of chef Thomas Keller.

While The French Laundry is known for elaborate and complicated dishes showcasing California’s wines and produce, the restaurant’s gazpacho soup can be mastered by any avid home cook. The recipe, which was included in the restaurant’s celebrated 1999 cookbook, makes a bright chilled soup perfect for San Antonio’s sweaty summer days.

That soup pairs perfectly with a scallop ceviche that’s presented as a showy platter of hors d’oeuvres from the restaurant Solbar at the famed resort Solage Calistoga, known for providing guests with a complimentary Mercedes-Benz to explore wine country, among other perks. In their recipe tortilla chips are individually dressed with the ceviche and garnished with cilantro for a taste that’s both elegant and familiar to many palates across South Texas.

Heavier fare comes in the form of wine-braised short ribs. It’s a dish found on many menus at wineries with restaurants throughout Napa Valley. Our version comes from the well-known Joseph Phelps Vineyards, which bottles celebrated high-end wines.

Wine is the star in an unusual pasta dish from celebrity chef Michael Chiarello’s Napa restaurant Bottega.

Chairello shared the technique for absorbing an entire bottle of red wine into thin spaghettini in a 2010 cookbook celebrating many of Bottega’s recipes. The pasta comes out a striking purple color contrasted with bright green rapini sauteed with garlic and fiery Calabrian chile paste. It’s a memorable balance of bitter greens and mildly acidic pasta.

No trip to Napa would be complete without a stop at The Model Bakery, which has kept visitors and residents alike loaded with carbs for nine decades. The bakery’s signature English muffins smeared with butter and jam have started the day for countless wine country tourists, and owner Karen Mitchell shared the recipe in a 2013 cookbook.

While the beverage of choice throughout Napa Valley is obviously wine, the region has given rise to several celebrated cocktail bars as well.

The Cucumber Collins at Goose & Gander has become one of the best known of the drinks shaken and stirred at those establishments, with a brilliant purple hue courtesy of cucumber slices pickled in a blueberry brine. It’s a great reminder that there’s far more to Napa’s food and beverage scene than grownup grape juice.

Flooding hits surf shop, laundry | Local News - Gloucester Daily Times

laundry.indah.link

Too much water is putting a local surf shop at the risk of going under.

Surfari Stand Up Paddle & Surf has had to temporarily close shop at 210 Main St. because 6 feet of water poured into the basement in five minutes Thursday afternoon.

“We had customers in here and then all of a sudden they heard Christian swearing in the backroom and the water was coming up so fast,” Nicole del Rosario said of her husband and co-owner. “Within five minutes it was completely to the top of the basement.”

The source of the water?

When the storm clouds rolled over Cape Ann on Thursday afternoon, del Rosario said all the resulting rain accumulated at the abutting construction project for the mixed-use development of what will be called Harbor Village.

“And every bit of water from that building came in here.”

She said the water flowed into pits right against the surf shop’s walls and then poured into its basement, rising above the basement's ceiling and destroying the shop's air conditioning unit and thousands of dollars worth of merchandise.

Two doors down from the construction project, Home Style Laundry at 212 Main St. has been experiencing similar problems.

“Both the surf shop and I have struggled with water,” said Home Style owner Tyler Gross.

Seeking solutions

Harbor Villages project manager Ilene Vogel, of the North Shore Community Development Coalition, said that the flooding didn’t originate at the construction site.

“We didn’t create the flood,” Vogel said. “It was rainwater that came from the sky onto the site.”

She explained that because there is no longer a building — the defunct Cameron’s Restaurant — on the site, the water ran right through the site and onto the next property.  “We have a pretty sophisticated drainage program that will be put in place when the building is completely built,” Vogel said, explaining that because the developers are in the middle of construction it has yet to be integrated into the structure.

In the meantime, North Shore Community Development Coalition and Groom Construction plan to place crushed stone in between the properties and add temporary gutters to help with water flow.

David Groom outlined in an email to the Times that while his construction company “shares no responsibility since we are performing work under the directive of engineers who have been designing solutions both temporary and permanent,” it did work with its subcontractors for the past four days “straight, and overnight” to help the surf shop with "cleanup and remedial solutions.”

This included overnighting electrical parts from California, setting up generators, buying temporary air conditioning units, and working with local businessman Mac Bell to use an adjacent building to assist with cleaning surfboards, wet suits and inventory that had been in Surfari's basement.

In a text correspondence with the Times, del Rosario explained that she had asked for the shop's belongings to be left in place for insurance to view.

"But the landlord and Groom insisted on moving our belongings to the alley out back and to an offsite location of their choice," she wrote. "(Surf) boards were hosed of excessive mud on the way out of the building by a cleanup team so our staff did not overly mud up the storage facility they chose."

Not the first time

This is not the first time that the del Rosario’s surf shop has experienced flooding in the basement.

“It happened in March,” del Rosario said. “We were completely flooded and lost thousands of dollars worth of stuff.”

She explained that when she arrived on the property this spring she found 3 feet of water and a basement wall blown out.

Robert Colbert, the landlord of 210 Main St., did not return the Times’ calls in time for publication.

Nearby Home Style Laundry also has experienced flooding,  in the back of the shop, due to the construction, Gross said.

“My foundation goes down into the ground and they took all of the dirt away without asking and no permission,” he said, adding that at one point Groom had come in to help stop potential flooding a while back, but nothing has worked permanently.

“It has just been one Band-Aid after another and they have not fixed the problem,” Gross said.

As the surf shop experienced major financial losses due to last week's’s rainstorm, Vogel said she is talking with insurance companies on how to handle the situation.

“We will do whatever we can to ensure they get reimbursed,” she said.

“When these things happen, it is terrible, and this is a business that wasn’t able to function during a busy time and I feel bad that was the case,” Vogel said. “Unfortunately construction is never a fun time for anyone.”

Meanwhile, del Rosario is waiting to hear back from the city Building Department to hear if her building is secure and next door's construction site has  proper drainage installed "so that we don't end up with water in our building again."

A representative from the city's Building Department did not return the Times' call or email in time for publication.

These laundry-modelling grandparents are an Instagram sensation - EsquireMe

laundry.indah.link

Last Tuesday, 83-year-old Chang Wan-ji and his wife Hsu Hsiu-e, 84, celebrated reaching 50,000 Instagram followers with their 18th post. By Saturday their 19th marked a doubling of that figure. Three days later – at the time of writing – they're nudging half a million followers.

The owners of the Wansho Laundry in central Taiwan, the couple have been anonymously washing clothes for the last 70 years. Then lockdown happened. To keep them amused, their grandson, Reef Chang, talked them into dressing up in unclaimed clothes their customers had abandoned years ago. To everyone’s surprise the resulting account, @WantShowAsYoung, has become a huge hit, featuring in the style pages of the New York Times and on BBC News.

There they are in one picture, modelling sky-blue Converse, graphic t-shirts and plastic pimp shades, very Paul’s Boutique-era Beastie Boys. And there, in complementary beige suits, styled out with rolled-up sleeves and cutting-edge attitude. Also there, beaming in bucket hats and hooded neon windbreakers, more forgotten laundry – or is it Off-White, S/S'20?

“They had nothing to do,” the younger Chang turned unofficial stylist told the New York Times. “I saw how bored they were and wanted to brighten up their lives.”

Faced with being unable to open shop, and understandably wary about going outside, the octogenarian proprietors of Wansho Laundry have happily moved in the opposite direction.

"My grandson is very creative,” Ms Hsu told the New York Times. “His creativity has made us happy, and other people, too.”

Becoming Instagram famous can be a notoriously short-run affair, and while Chang Wan-ji and Hsu Hsiu-e are quite reasonably baffled at the sudden global attention, it wouldn’t be a total surprise if their story had legs. Or formed the basis for the next Gucci campaign.

Either way, they’ve already provided a noble public service – in more ways than one. As posts on @WantShowAsYoung suggest “A friendly reminder|Don’t forget to pick up your laundry.”
