laundry.indah.link

Three West Seattle Crime Watch notes this midday:

ROAD-RAGE ARREST, GUN SEIZED: This happened just after 5 pm last night. Here’s the SPD summary: “Officers responded to a road-rage incident in the 3200 block of SW Morgan St. The caller reported a male in a vehicle blocking the roadway, and when the caller asked him to move his vehicle, the driver pointed a handgun at her. The male fled the scene but was located a few minutes later when he returned to his residence. The suspect was arrested for Felony Harassment and for DUI.” A subsequent search turned up this gun:

The photo is from SPD. We’re checking on the suspect’s status.

ROBBERY FOLLOWUPS: We reported briefly last night on two street robberies reported in West Seattle. Police tell us today they’re still investigating whether these might be related. From the initial SPD summaries, we have a few more details. In the first one, around 8:10 pm, “two juveniles were walking at 30 Ave SW/SW Thistle St and a dark 4-door sedan pulled up next to them. The sedan was occupied by four males. One of the males exited the vehicle and began asking the juveniles questions. The male pulled out a handgun, and demanded items from the juveniles. A couple of the occupants exited the vehicle and talked the suspect out of committing the robbery. The sedan fled the scene. The juveniles walked home,” and called police. In the second one, about 8:25 pm, “the victim was driving in the alley at 16 Ave SW/SW Barton St. (One suspect) was in the middle of the alley and the victim stopped her vehicle. (He) displayed a handgun, and (the second suspect) approached the victim in the driver?s seat and punched her in the face. The suspects took the victim s purse and wallet. The suspects fled the scene, possibly in a vehicle.” No further descriptive information in either case.

LAUNDRY-ROOM BURGLAR: The photo and report are from Beverly:

Apartment storage/laundry room break-in on 9th and Holden:

On Monday (12/27/) morning, this man broke into our secured apartment building and then broke the locks off the washer and dryer to take the very small amount of change, then proceeded to break into our shared locked storage room. He was clearly rummaging around in our storage locker as he had a few tools inside the door ready to take. My husband confronted him while I called 911. He ran out the back door just minutes before police arrived.A report has been filed, case # 2020-355004. If you have any info on this man, please contact SPD 206-733-9800.

Questions linger on Newsom and the French Laundry lobbyist - Los Angeles Times

laundry.indah.link

On the website of one of Sacramento’s most influential lobbying firms, partner Jason Kinney boasted of his close connection to Gavin Newsom, noting he has advised the governor for “nearly 14 years.”

The plug suddenly disappeared last month, days after Newsom drew national criticism for attending Kinney’s 50th birthday dinner at the famed Napa Valley restaurant the French Laundry.

The event turned into a political disaster for Newsom, drawing charges of hypocrisy at the very time the governor urged residents to avoid gatherings and stay home as much as possible amid an unprecedented surge in the coronavirus.

But the episode also exposed something that has long been the subject of quiet discussion in Sacramento: Newsom’s decision to maintain a tight relationship with Kinney, who is director of a lobbying firm with business before the governor.

Kinney is well known around the state Capitol as a strategist, ghostwriter of Newsom’s speeches and unofficial fixer summoned to help loosen the governor from political jams. His dual roles as an advisor to Newsom and a lobbyist paid by companies to influence the governor and his staff have raised questions about potential conflicts of interest for the administration.

“I think it certainly can cause the public to question whether any advice the governor is getting is in the public interest or in the interest of the companies that have paid Kinney’s firm to lobby,” said Emily Rusch, executive director of the California Public Interest Research Group, an independent consumer advocacy organization. “It’s common sense to question that.”

Kinney’s firm, Axiom Advisors, has lobbied on behalf of several companies seeking to sway decision-making in Newsom’s office, including Netflix and unsecured creditors of Pacific Gas & Electric, records reviewed by The Times show. According to the firm, Kinney has built a firewall between his work for Newsom and Axiom’s clients, makes money only on work for his individual clients and does not profit from the firm’s overall earnings.

California law doesn’t expressly prohibit lobbying the administration while also advising the governor, and some of Newsom’s predecessors sought the input of Sacramento lobbyists.

Yet Kinney’s personal and professional alliance with Newsom has given him and his firm a unique position of power. In its list of the top players in state government and politics, Capitol Weekly described Kinney as “a sort of majordomo” for the governor who “makes strategic policy and political recommendations.” Axiom Advisors was launched shortly after Newsom’s election and has become one of the state’s top-grossing lobbying businesses.

The relationship, many in Sacramento say, was bound to draw attention to the ethical boundaries in the Newsom administration.

The Times spoke with more than two dozen lobbyists, Capitol staff members, legislators and political consultants about the governor’s work with Kinney. Many of them spoke on condition of anonymity, citing concerns that discussing Newsom and his advisor could affect their working relationships with both men.

Newsom and his office declined to answer any questions for this story.

“The Governor has been successful throughout a twenty year career in public service because he makes decisions in the interest of the public good,” said Sahar Robertson, a spokeswoman for Newsom, in a statement. His decisions are rooted in good public policy, and he’s never hesitated to say no to organizations and individuals he has long relationships with when their priorities run counter to the public good.”

Molly Weedn, a spokeswoman for Kinney, said he separates his role as “an outside communications advisor on political issues” from his lobbying work.

“He adheres to strict ethical standards and fully and transparently discloses all lobbying activity,” Weedn said. “He does not use his role as an advisor to benefit the firm’s clients.”

Axiom reported receiving $582,266 from clients in the first three months of Newsom’s term — a figure that ballooned to $2.3 million by the end of the second quarter. From Newsom’s inauguration in 2019 through the end of September 2020, Axiom reported a total of $10.9 million for lobbying work.

While apologizing during a news conference last month for attending the French Laundry dinner, Newsom described Kinney as a friend he’s known nearly two decades.

The relationship dates to Newsom’s time as a San Francisco supervisor. Kinney said he met Newsom in 2002 during a statewide homelessness conference while working as a senior communications advisor and chief speechwriter for former Democratic Gov. Gray Davis. He described Newsom as the one the “most capable, dedicated human beings I’ve ever met.”

Newsom “was literally one of the few elected leaders in the nation with the courage and compassion to talk honestly about California’s homelessness crisis, and he was putting smart, local solutions on the table to help people get off the streets,” Kinney said in a statement.

Kinney, who advertised himself as a senior strategist for Newsom, helped run the then-lieutenant governor’s 2016 campaign to legalize marijuana. For years, Kinney has worked behind the scenes to strengthen Newsom’s relationships with influential leaders and delegates within the California Democratic Party, for which he has consulted during much of the last decade.

But the French Laundry dinner has prompted Kinney to edit his list of clients.

His firm said he ended his work with the state Democratic Party this month. The change came shortly before the governor’s office released a new ethics policy that prohibits anyone from working as a paid advisor to the party, the governor or his campaigns while also lobbying the administration.

The rule, which was introduced just weeks after the French Laundry dinner, applies to all of the consultants who were on the governor’s or the California Democratic Party’s payrolls when it was announced on Dec. 11, Newsom’s office said. Kinney had ended his work with the party before that date and was not included on a list the governor’s office released of paid consultants who would be affected by the policy.

Like many established political operators in Sacramento, Kinney offers some services and communications strategy advice to the governor for free — a show of goodwill and a form of investment in a candidate — but has previously accepted payment to work on Newsom’s initiatives, state filings show. The lobbying ban does not address Kinney’s unpaid work for Newsom.

Axiom’s roster of clients includes dialysis provider DaVita, Marathon Petroleum, Poseidon Water, Acadia Healthcare and several companies in the marijuana business.

Netflix executives hired Kinney’s firm this year to lobby for a change in state law that could have made the company eligible for a tax credit potentially worth millions of dollars, according to state filings.

Those familiar with the tax bill said it came from the governor’s office — with Kinney’s involvement — in the final hours of the legislative session. The proposal was introduced so late that it required a special rule waiver to be considered.

The proposal ultimately failed, but records show that the Silicon Valley streaming giant paid Axiom Advisors $52,500 for working on the change to the tax credit from July through September. Earlier filings show the firm received an additional $87,500 for working on “tax issues” for Netflix from April through June.

Kinney declined to say whether he discussed the tax credit proposal with Newsom or his staff. Newsom did not respond to a question about whether the language in the proposal came from his office and if he or anyone on his staff discussed it with Kinney.

Sources close to the governor say he and Kinney have long been cognizant of the potential for conflicts of interest stemming from their relationship and note that Newsom scrutinizes issues involving any of his political advisors. Newsom’s departing chief of staff, Ann O’Leary, also tried to establish boundaries and screen outside advisors for potential conflicts, according to the sources. After announcing the new lobbying policy this month, O’Leary asked the state’s political watchdog agency for ideas on practices to further limit undue influence.

During Newsom’s transition into the governor’s office in late 2018, Kinney‘s firm said he recommended candidates for jobs in the administration, an unpaid volunteer role that also has been deleted from his biography on the Axiom Advisors website. Kinney declined to answer a question about whether he has ever lobbied any of the people he recommended after they landed positions in the administration, or connected them to other members of his firm.

In the weeks before Newsom was sworn in, a spokesman for the governor said he adopted a rule that prevented those who worked on the transition from lobbying transition officials. Kinney already had deregistered as a lobbyist before working on the transition. But that ban, the governor’s staff said, was short-lived and ended when Newsom officially took office.

Three weeks after Newsom was inaugurated as California’s 40th governor — delivering a speech Kinney helped craft — Kinney registered as a lobbyist for his new firm, Axiom Advisors.

California laws allow lobbyists to advise the politicians they seek to influence. Government accountability advocates, including Rusch of CalPIRG, say that even if efforts were made to address lobbyists influencing the elected officials they advise, it would be difficult to establish effective legal boundaries on a tight friendship.

Kinney also has served as an advisor to Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg and was a spokesman and communications strategist for the state Senate’s Democratic Caucus and president pro tem’s office.

Kevin de León, a former leader of the state Senate who recently was elected to the Los Angeles City Council, said Kinney’s work for him and his Democratic colleagues never conflicted with his lobbying clients.

“He never, in one single instance, lobbied me on behalf of any of his clients,” De León said. “He had the good sense to know you keep a separation of church and state.”

Kinney’s activities have drawn the attention of the state’s political watchdog agency in the past. The Fair Political Practices Commission fined Kinney in 2013 for failing to properly register as a lobbyist and file disclosures about his activities.

An examination of Axiom’s clients through filings with the secretary of state shows the firm has been hired by several companies seeking to influence the governor and his administration. Some of those clients received favorable outcomes on their bills or issues, while others fell flat.

While Newsom grappled with the bankruptcy of PG&E, the largest investor-owned utility in California, Axiom made $220,000 to lobby him and the Legislature on behalf of a court-appointed panel of the company’s creditors.

The firm wrote in court documents that it spent a significant amount of time meeting with lawmakers and the governor’s office to discuss a law that established a $21-billion fund for PG&E and Newsom’s approval of the company’s reorganization plan, both described as major milestones in the case. Its work included efforts to “understand the governor’s views regarding the plan.”

Weedn, Axiom’s spokeswoman, said Kinney “did not lobby on behalf of the unsecured creditors of PG&E and has not had conversations with any officials about those issues.”

The Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors of PG&E, which represented financial institutions, contractors and electrical workers, paid Axiom $20,000 a month to lobby on the bankruptcy case for nearly a year. Axiom was required to file court documents requesting that a judge approve the payments and detailed more than 500 hours of work. Kinney reported a small number of hours worked, which included meetings with the Axiom team about the case, and other lobbyists on his team performed the bulk of the firm’s work, court filings show. The firm said that Kinney’s work did not involve lobbying.

Meanwhile, California environmentalists and government watchdog groups have been sounding the alarm about Axiom’s ties to a major oil company with business before the Newsom administration: Aera Energy, a partnership of Shell Oil and ExxonMobil.

Since April, the California Geologic Energy Management Division, known as CalGEM, has issued more than 50 new hydraulic fracturing permits to Aera Energy and Chevron.

Aera paid Axiom $200,000 in lobbying fees in 2019 and 2020, records at the secretary of state’s office show. The Newsom administration and CalGEM were listed among the agencies that Aera lobbied.

“Newsom’s close personal relationship with Kinney raises serious concerns that corporations that pay big money to Axiom can obtain preferential treatment from the governor,” said Derek Seidman of the Public Accountability Initiative, a Buffalo, N.Y.-based nonprofit focused on government and corporate accountability.

The oil permits issued to Aera came after a 2019 announcement by Newsom that he would temporarily block new hydraulic fracturing permits until the projects could be reviewed by an independent panel of scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. State Oil and Gas Supervisor Uduak-Joe Ntuk said in August that the permits issued since April underwent that independent environmental review.

In October, Newsom called on the California Legislature to ban hydraulic fracturing, an action he said is not within his executive authority as governor — an opinion disputed by environmentalists.

Less than 10 days after Newsom made that announcement, CalGEM issued six new fracking permits to Aera Energy.

On behalf of Aera, Axiom also lobbied legislators on a bill that would have mandated health and safety buffer zones around oil and gas wells and refineries near schools, playgrounds, nursing homes and other sensitive residential areas. The legislation was strongly opposed by the oil industry and failed to pass in the state Senate.

Weedn said Kinney did not conduct any work or receive any personal compensation from Aera.

With the coronavirus surging, large regions of the state under stay-at-home orders and a budding recall effort to boot him from office, the governor’s French Laundry gaffe couldn’t come at a worse time, said Matt Rexroad, a former Yolo County supervisor and Republican political consultant.

“It’s one little problem snowballing and becoming a big deal,” Rexroad said. “Right now he’s under the microscope.”

Although Rexroad said Newsom’s decision to attend Kinney’s dinner raises questions about his leadership during the pandemic, he noted it’s not out of the ordinary for governors to have close friends who work as their political consultants and moonlight as lobbyists.

“It’s not a problem if the candidate and the consultant are both aware of the motives and it’s fully disclosed,” Rexroad said. “The governor is a politician. He’s going to hang out with political people, and Jason Kinney is a political person.”

Running Laundry Routes Effectively, Profitably, Safely (Conclusion) - American Laundry News

laundry.indah.link

CHICAGO — Bob Doran, routing specialist for Alsco, a linen and uniform rental service headquartered in Salt Lake City, says the most important part of running laundry/linen service delivery routes is providing customers with the best products and service requested safely and efficiently.

“Of course making complete deliveries with quality products as promised will always be extremely important, but we also expect our customer sales representatives to maintain the highest level of communications with all of their customers,” adds Jeff Nelson a director of operations at Prudential Overall Supply, a provider of uniforms and reusable textiles with a corporate office in Irvine, California.

“So often, our ability to retain customers boils down to the relationship between our representative and our customer’s staff.”

To accomplish these goals, route reps/drivers need the latest technology, and the proper training.

DRIVER TRAINING

As technology moves forward and information available increases, one of the most significant changes Nelson has seen in the role of a driver recently is improved tools to monitor safety—not only in terms of such things as ergonomics and safe behavior. He says that the company’s ability to monitor driving safety has increased tenfold.

“When we consider the type of driving we do where we’re in city traffic and in and out of very tight parking lots, safe driving behaviors are extremely important and now we have the means in which to monitor those behaviors,” he shares.

Doran points out that the role of the driver is no longer just delivery and pickup. The emphasis is on service.

“I once had a service manager who frequently said, “I need you to service the account, not just be a delivery person. I can get a chimp to do that!’” he shares.

“Route persons are asked to do so much more, from better communication between themselves and the customer to anticipating the needs of the customer, inventory control, assuring the product is delivered in the best condition in a safe efficient manner—all while operating the route safely.”

To train drivers on route technology, Doran suggests that if the branch is using a GPS program, study the data and optimize the route if possible.

“For the branches just using the routing software, perform the route in the manner provided by the program,” he says. “It is easy for some route persons to go back to old habits, which can cost branches in the end.”

“Whenever Prudential contracts with a company offering updated technology, a part of that agreement includes a significant number of hours of training provided by the experts who developed the technology,” shares Nelson.

“We as an organization have also created some additional positions and hired staff whose responsibilities include monitoring the new technology and identifying those who may require additional training and focus.”

Beyond training on new technology, route drivers also need effective training on other factors, such as efficient vehicle operation and customer service.

“That begins from day one when once hired, our drivers complete an intense, eight-week training program that includes all of the above and then some,” Nelson shares.

Once completed, he says the leadership team conducts hundreds of “route observations” every year, where the representative is evaluated on about 30 separate items. The route observation includes evaluations of all the previously mentioned elements.

“Another effective method to identify those customer sales representatives requiring additional training is our internal customer visitation process where our leadership team evaluates the condition of the account and meets with the key contact to gain their perspective of our level of service,” Nelson adds. “We also make use of an outside company that conducts over-the-phone interviews with each of our customers once per year.”

Doran recommends a laundry insist the route person run the route in the manner provided by the software.

“It has taken into consideration the most efficient manner to perform the route in an effort to save as much fuel and route labor as possible,” he points out. “There are always issues that arise after a reroute has been performed. There can be a need to adjust due to the issue.”

How to make the best laundry detergent substitute - Reviewed

laundry.indah.link

You’ve let your dirty clothes pile up and now, as you pull on those decade-old sweatpants tucked in the very back of your dresser, you realize it really is time to do your laundry.

You reach for your laundry detergent when all of the sudden, you realize you are out of any and all detergent. While you could wait until your next grocery store run to stock back up, you might be forced to re-wear some not-so-clean clothing.

Luckily, you’re not without a solution—and we mean that literally. Many household items can transform into laundry detergent substitutes that work just fine when you’re in a pinch.

While none of these recipes should be long-term solutions, they’re safe for use in your washing machine for the time being.

1. Mix it up with good old baking soda

Baking Soda

Credit: Getty Images / ThamKC

Combining baking soda with other ingredients like washing soda and bar soap will make for a much more powerful wash that's comparable to your regular laundry detergent.

Along with deodorizing your sneakers and refreshing your carpet, baking soda can be a simple yet effective laundry detergent alternative. Ultra-gentle, it caters to sensitive skin, but it also gets tough odors out of fabric.

Just be sure to use baking soda in moderate amounts and proceed with caution on delicates, as it can wear down on certain fabrics like wool and silk. One cup of baking soda per large load of laundry should do the trick.

2. White vinegar has added benefits

Another option for sensitive skin, or if you just prefer a chemical-free solution, distilled white vinegar makes for a viable laundry detergent substitute. Don’t worry—vinegar won’t stink up your clothing. Once rinsed through a wash cycle, your clothes will be completely odorless.

A warning: Don’t pour the vinegar directly onto the clothes, as this could risk staining. Instead, add a half cup of distilled white vinegar to one cup of water before tossing it into the washing machine.

Aside from clean clothes, there are some great benefits to using distilled white vinegar in your wash: it can help loosen up soapy residue that has accumulated on clothes and towels over time; it can remove stains pretty well; it can be used as a pretreatment to clothes, too. Dilute one cup of vinegar with a gallon of water and let it soak overnight.

3. Boost your laundry with a borax solution

We’ve seen what borax and a couple of other handy ingredients can do when it comes to stripping your laundry. For this reason, borax makes for a decent laundry detergent substitute. While borax is a great sidekick to detergent, it can be used to loosen stains and brighten up clothing on its own.

If you have them, adding a few other ingredients to borax will make it much more effective in the wash. 20 Mule Team recommends making a laundry boosting borax solution by adding one tablespoon of borax and two cups of hot water into a sealable container.

Mix the solution and add to laundry as a laundry booster—or, in this case, in place of detergent if you’re completely out.

4. Hand wash with shampoo or body wash

Hand Wash

A fragrance-free, gentle formula body wash or shampoo works well for hand washing clothes. While you'll get a fresh clean, it won't be as effective in removing stains, so be sure to pre-treat it with a different method or stain-removing product.

If you’re really in a pinch and don’t mind handwashing a few garments to get them clean, grab some of these go-to products found in your shower.

Make sure you’re using a gentle formula, as products with additives and moisturizers can prevent a good wash. Baby shampoo or baby body wash works well if you’re a parent and already have this on hand—if you don’t, any gentle body wash or shampoo with basic ingredients will do.

Fill up a large tub with warm water and soak your garments, towels, or other dirty laundry. Add a small dollop of shampoo to the water, lather it, and add more if you feel necessary. Rinse completely with warm or cold water and toss in the dryer or let it hang dry.

5. Make your own powder detergent using a bar of soap

You read that right—you can DIY your own detergent at home.
For a powder detergent, this recipe by DIY Natural is free of any additive chemicals.

Grab a fragrance-free bar soap and begin grating it into a large bowl. From there, add a cup of borax and a cup of washing soda—fairly similar to baking soda, washing soda is a grainy powder that helps to deeply clean soiled fabrics and laundry. If you don’t have washing soda on hand, you can also bake your own batch with baking soda you already have.

Stir your borax and washing soda mixture thoroughly for five minutes. Use one tablespoon per regular load or two for heavily soiled clothes.

6. DIY a liquid detergent using dishwashing liquid

You can also make liquid detergent by thinking outside the box.

One Good Thing recommends mixing half cups each of borax, washing soda, and liquid dish soap to a large pitcher. Add four cups of hot (not boiling, as that can result in accidentally melting your container) water to allow ingredients to dissolve, then fill up the remainder of the container with cold water.

Shake before each use and use a quarter cup for each large load of laundry.

Isabel's Prince St. Laundry, a Community Friend in Boston's North End - NorthEndWaterfront.com

laundry.indah.link

The most important community spots are often the least celebrated.

When I first moved to the North End in 1991, the Italian section of Boston had largely gone unchanged for decades. It was the affordable part of Boston back then. My street level two-bedroom apartment at 4A Prince (currently the location of the restaurant Artu) was $625 per month. The European, Florence’s, and Felicia’s were the go-to restaurants. Pizza could be had at Regina’s, Circle Pizza, Café Pompeii, and Umberto’s (although every pizza in the North End has its own distinct style and taste).

Though Mike’s Pastry was already a local stop for tourists, traditional family-run bakeries like Parziale’s and Boschetto’s were the local haunts of those in the know. There was no Rose Kennedy Greenway, only the green expressway separating the historic Italian enclave from the rest of Boston.  There was no CVS, no Dunkin’ Donuts, although one eventually came and went on Salem Street, and Starbucks had yet to invade the East Coast.

Over the past three decades, the city of Boston has changed. And while many businesses in the North End have gone the way of the New World Bank that once operated on Hanover Street, there is a laundromat at 22 Prince that is still going strong, and in doing so has deservedly become one of the standard-bearers of this post-Big Dig North End neighborhood.

I first walked into Prince St. Laundry (informally known as Isabel’s to the locals) one night during the summer of 1991. On any given visit you could expect to see Isabel, her mother Rosa, and/or Anna—the three making up the entire staff. Isabel was young, motivated, hard-working, clearly in charge, and would gladly tell you that she was Portuguese and not Italian. Watching me from the corner of her eye, she once took it upon herself to use her own quarters to buy extra detergent and then promptly push me aside, pour the extra detergent forcefully over my laundry, close the lid of the machine, push the requisite buttons to set it into action, and then turned to me saying something like, “How are your clothes ever going to get clean, Jay, if you don’t use enough detergent?” Enough said. I have not done a load of laundry since without thinking of Isabel’s subtle recommendation.

Isabel and I became fast friends. She convinced me on more than one occasion to get more active in community events, including a rather heated meeting at the Nazzaro Center with city planners trying to convince North End residents that it was time to dig up Columbus Park alongside the Marriott Long Wharf citing that the trees there were well past their age of maturity evidenced by the fact that the park had been built in 1982. In response, an older Italian man stood up finally silencing the city planner suggesting that Boston should then also tear up the Public Garden, the trees there being hundreds of years past their age of maturity.

Isabel’s laundromat was the hub of the neighborhood in our corner of the North End. It was the place where you often ran into the same people, and because everyone in the process of doing laundry is usually dressed comfortably, certainly without style in mind, you were left feeling the same way you might if casually hanging around in your living room wearing an old pair of jeans or pajamas.

Doing laundry at Isabel’s was an enjoyable ritual usually resulting in conversation with people, catching up on what was happening in the North End. I almost never went back to my apartment while doing laundry, for instance, even though it was only a short walk away. One morning people were sharing stories about a Salem Street butcher that was suspiciously robbed hours before. Another day, I recall chatter about some break-ins by way of fire escape at which point a local man decisively interjected that it would be taken care of (insinuating that police would not be called upon to settle the problem). I was also at Isabel’s years later during the morning of the 9/11 attacks, a customer curiously asking what movie we were watching as we all stared in disbelief at the laundromat’s low-volume television as it re-played footage of the first plane tragically hitting the World Trade Center which was sadly that morning’s news.

The North End is fortunate that Isabel did not sell her business during the mid-1990s, a possible direction she once suggested to me in conversation. Both the neighborhood and the city have changed a great deal since then. It would have been unthinkable at the time to suggest that not only would Florence’s, the European, Felicia’s, and Circle Pizza soon be gone from the North End, but also landmarks like Anthony’s, Jimmy’s, Durgin-Park, and Jacob Wirth’s from the city itself.

It is good to know that despite inevitable changes to this historically entrenched area of the city, Isabel’s Prince St. Laundry continues to not only be relevant, but is now a surviving business emblematic of the North End from years gone by, helping to carry the torch of this community forward.

I was tempted to stop in a few years back after having dinner at a restaurant across the street from Prince St. Laundry with an old friend who encouraged me to walk over to say hello when I saw Isabel step outside. I chose not to. There would not possibly be enough time for the two of us to catch up on everything that has happened over the past twenty years. That kind of a discussion will require a return to the North End and a gigantic load of laundry.

Rolling Back Environmental Protections: A Laundry List of the Past Four Years - The Source Weekly

laundry.indah.link

As its time in office comes to a close and we look ahead to 2021, the Trump Administration will be remembered for many things—but conservation will not be one of them. During his time in office, his administration has led an assault on the environment: reversing, revoking, or rolling back nearly 100 rules and regulations that impacted clean air, clean water, wildlife, toxic chemicals, energy exploration and emissions, and climate change, to name but a few. Though the administration did pass the John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act, along with the Great American Outdoors Act, these were overshadowed in the wake of environmental deregulations.

Trump's plan for energy dominance for the U.S. also included reducing imports of foreign energy while boosting exports of American energy. In short, energy development would trump environmental protection. To promote this America First Energy Plan, the administration has removed or rescinded many Obama-era regulations which targeted reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change while protecting public lands, wildlife and other essentials such as clean air and water. One example of this was the Affordable Clean Energy rule which would enable states, not the Environmental Protection Agency, to establish clean air standards for gas- and coal-fired power plants. This action repealed the 2015 Clean Power Plan and set lower air quality standards that even the EPA agreed would have an increased impact on vulnerable communities.

"If the pandemic has taught us anything, it's that we must fundamentally reset our relationship with wildlife and the natural world," said Brett Hartl, government affairs director at the Center for Biological Diversity. "If we protect the planet's most imperiled species, we'll take care of people too. Their protection will give us cleaner air and water and less risk of another zoonotic pandemic sweeping across the globe."

Internationally, the Trump administration pulled the U.S. out of the Paris climate agreement, signed by at least 55 countries representing 55% of the world's global emissions, to combat climate change in 2015, citing unfair economic burdens placed on U.S. companies and businesses. The agreement targeted keeping global temperature rises below a 2-degree-Celsius increase above pre-industrial levels over the next century. Withdrawing from the accord in 2017 enabled the U.S. to pursue fossil fuel development, but also signaled the U.S. would not be a major stakeholder in leading the charge against carbon emissions and climate change, even though shareholders of energy development companies are calling for alignment. As of November, 194 countries and the European Union are signed on.

Numerous air pollution and carbon emission rules were also weakened, which included standards for fuel economy in vehicles, methane emissions, power plant emissions, air pollution over state and national parks as well as wilderness areas, and ozone pollution to "downwind states."

Energy dominance also comes at a price, as energy reserves on public lands have also been targeted for development. The current administration plans to open a critical portion of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, one of the last remaining wild places on earth, to oil and gas development. Home to musk ox, wolves, polar bears and large caribou herds that the native Gwich'in people depend upon for survival, the administration recently released a plan that energy exploration in a portion of the 19- million-acre refuge will have no lasting impacts on the landscape or wildlife. Auctions for the leases open for bidding in January.

In January 2020, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service adopted a rule change to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, a 98-year-old piece of legislation designed to protect migratory birds. The rule change deleted the "incidental take" language in the act, which had established measures to penalize companies or individuals whose actions resulted in the accidental killing of birds. This might happen at toxic borrow pits from oil or mining projects, oil spills, powerlines, wind turbines and other activities where mitigation would no longer be included or enforced. This ruling was overturned in August.

For those who enjoy visiting southern Utah and exploring the Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears National Monuments, these two spectacular areas were reduced in size and the deleted lands opened for leasing to mining and drilling development.

In addition to these rollbacks, the current administration also weakened the National Environment Policy Act, a key environmental law which provides for public notification, review and comment on potential and cumulative impacts of federal projects to communities, landscapes, wildlife and other entities, as well as providing for alternative options. The new rules limit which projects require a NEPA analysis, the length of comment periods and having to provide analysis on cumulative impacts, all designed to fast-track projects and limit public participation—which can include local and state governments.

Overall, the administration has rolled back at least 100 environmental regulations and rules. Many have been challenged in court due to inadequate justification and some are expected to be replaced once the Biden administration takes charge. Others, which were rejected in court, were rewritten and inserted into policy through administrative rules. The current administration's desire to decrease environmental protections and revert controls back to states and local governments while limiting federal government "overreach" will, if left to stand, place environmental protection on the back burner.

Ariel, one of the leading detergent brands from the house of Procter & Gamble (P&G) has recently launched in India, the revolutionary 3-in-1 pre-dosed Ariel Matic PODs, that are set to make laundry fun and convenient in the new year.

These PODs are designed using a water-soluble film holding concentrated liquid detergent in three demarcated chambers. Each of these sections simultaneously do their job of cleaning, removing stains and brightening up clothes during wash. Gone are the days of measuring out detergent, having soap residue on freshly laundered clothes and messy spillage!

These small yet super-efficient Ariel Matic 3-in-1 PODs are so hassle-free and efficient, all men or women have to do is pop the POD into your machine and then sit back and relax. Once a POD is placed into any top or front-load fully automatic washing machine, it dissolves completely in the water, leaving no residue. The three solutions work together to provide HD clean and a stress-free laundry experience to the user, with spotless cleaning and tough stain removal making whites brighter and colors more vibrant.

Ariel, the #1 recommended brand by most washing-machine manufacturers globally, has always prioritized product innovations to make laundry easy and convenient for its consumers. Some of the brand’s most popular offerings include Ariel Matic powder, Ariel Matic Liquid and now, adding to its portfolio, are the new revolutionary 3-in-1 Ariel Matic PODs.

For most loads, one wash needs just one POD. This does not need to be cut or peeled; it can be placed into the machine as is before the clothes go in. The tub has a unique child-lock lid, that makes the product safe from accidental exposure to kids. Like any detergent, it is recommended to store the pack out of the reach of children.

Running Laundry Routes Effectively, Profitably, Safely (Part 1) - American Laundry News

laundry.indah.link

ROUTE TECHNOLOGY

Doran says that in the past, technology focused mostly on customer placement. Then it shifted to how to service all customers per day in an efficient manner.

He says today’s programs incorporate much more technology and features. Not only is routing software utilized, but it is also used in conjunction with GPS—where a service team can see, in real-time, where their route personnel are.

Over time, the program records the route information and that information can be analyzed to check if the route is running as efficiently as possible, and then it can be used to reroute to improve efficiency if necessary.

“The first program I used had been in existence since the late 1980s and performed well but needed periodic updates to maps, which is costly,” Doran shares. “Also, the process was more of a ‘plot the customers and route the days.’ We could tell the program how much time we needed per stop based on the products being delivered.

“The newer programs allow us to put in so much more information, like time windows for servicing the account, such as accounts that do not serve breakfast and/or lunch. We can tell it not to go there between the hours of 1 and 4 p.m. If a customer does not want disruptions during the lunch hours, we can tell the program to not service that particular account between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

“Many medical offices are closed on Monday or Friday, and we can input that as well. The list can go on, but with all that, the program takes into consideration the information provided and routes the days in the most efficient manner.”

Doran adds that newer programs also give route planners the ability to monitor the number of pieces of product, as well as the weight, to see how it all impacts the trucks.

Nelson says there are many excellent tools available to laundries that did not exist even five years ago in terms of route planning, adding that Prudential has continued to research and invest in programs that provide guidance in efficient routing.

“With the continued increases in costs of equipment, fuel and labor, we have spent much time at each of our locations to ensure our routes are properly routed,” he says. “Today, we are in the process of introducing a new system that will not only ensure our routes are properly routed while also providing information on such things as fast starts and stops, fuel mileage, electronic pre-trip inspections.

“Our new system also includes front- and cab-facing cameras so that we can constantly monitor safe driving and address any unsafe behaviors.”

According to Nelson, a laundry operation can make the best use of new technology by starting with a proper rollout.

“The entire team has to be committed to the new technology and that will only happen if they are thoroughly trained from the outset,” he points out. “The entire team also has to understand the whys and the benefits to themselves and the organization. A lack of understanding and support from the users will easily nullify the benefits of the new technology.”

For Doran, making the best use of route technology involves using the program on an annual or semiannual basis, analyzing routes and making adjustments.

“Routes are constantly evolving,” he says. “New customers are added and others either go out of business or go with another supplier. Routes need to be looked at and adjusted for efficiency.

“Fuel costs are high and route labor can be affected if a route is operated in an inefficient manner.”

With the right technology and effective support, Nelson says Prudential’s routes are more efficient, allowing the company to add more stops and revenue to each route and, ultimately, reduce costs.

“One of the many and most important benefits of an efficiently routed organization is more revenue on routes providing more income for our customer sales representative, allowing us to recruit and retain better talent,” he shares.

“Beyond just route technology, our handheld units contain all of the information necessary for our field staff to make any adjustments necessary to ensure customer satisfaction.”

Doran shares that he has used Alsco’s route technology to assist the production side of the operation as well.

“For example, while optimizing routes, we also isolate accounts using certain ‘high use’ items, such as 90-inch by 90-inch white table linen, 53-inch by 114-inch white linens, and black and white napkins,” he says.

“Many accounts that use large amounts of these products are usually delivered to more than once a week, typically Monday-Thursday or Tuesday-Friday. Using the program to isolate these accounts, we can see if there is an imbalance or a time of the week that has a higher demand on production to get the product out.

“By changing the delivery days on said accounts to a more even schedule, moving several accounts from the Monday-Thursday schedule to Tuesday-Friday, we can better control the flow of product through the branch from soil to wash to finish, which can also assist the service department by minimizing shortages and special deliveries.”

Doran also says the technology can assist the sales team by creating defined sales territories, providing maps of sales territories based on zip codes.

“When used properly, we can assist our sales team by providing an area we currently service and they can focus on that area,” he shares. “In many markets, we can have several branches that may be adjacent to each other and have one salesperson for that area. With a detailed map, we can avoid placing a new customer on the wrong branch.”

Also, Doran says that because route technology can isolate accounts based on products used, the company can also see accounts by what they are not using.

“I have provided a list of accounts currently not using, for example, dust products, mats, mops,” he says. “The program can assist the route person and/or salesperson in an effort to increase sales within current customers. It’s very useful during sale contests.”

Check back Thursday for the conclusion on the importance of driver/rep training.

This is the No. 1 overlooked culprit of your laundry room woes - Inman

laundry.indah.link

Dryer vents are responsible for maintaining a moisture-and-lint-free laundry room. Here’s what homeowners need to know about this overlooked feature.

Are your clothes are still damp and wrinkly after hours in the dryer? Before driving to the nearest Home Depot and spending a few hundred dollars on a new dryer, there may be another culprit to blame — an old and neglected dryer vent.

“A good sign that your dryer vent is clogged and needs to be cleaned is that your clothes will start taking longer to dry,” certified master inspector Cord Werner told Inman in 2018. “I actually have a friend where his kids thought their dryer was messed up, so they bought another dryer, and it wasn’t working either. What they found out was that their dryer vent was clogged up.”

Beyond damp and wrinkly clothing, a humid laundry room and excess lint around the dryer are telltale signs that your dryer vent needs to be cleaned or replaced. Also, depending on where the dryer vent vents out (e.g. on the side of your home instead of the roof), you may be able to see excess dust and lint blocking the opening.

“Run your hand along the top of the dryer and washer, nearby shelves, and other items in the room,” a Flamingo Appliances explainer read. “If your hand comes back linty, that’s a sign that linty dryer exhaust is being released into the room.”

“If you clean a surface and it’s linty after the next time you run the dryer, then your dryer is leaking exhaust for sure,” it added. “Your duct may be ripped, open, or not installed at all.”

Lastly, you may notice the absence of a dryer vent altogether. Either way, it’s best to call a professional to clean or replace your existing vent or install a new one.

Homeowners should expect to spend between $100 to $200 for dryer vent cleaning, which should be scheduled alongside annual HVAC maintenance. Replacing or installing a dryer vent can cost as little as $80 or as much as $1,000 depending on materials, labor, and if the vent needs to be routed through the roof.

According to HomeAdvisor, the majority of the cost comes from labor ($20 to $25 an hour) whereas the metal dryer vent and vent kit, which includes the transition duct, clamps, and wall sleeve, usually costs no more than $60. However, the cost can quickly balloon if the vent needs to be moved or rerouted to the exterior — something that can set you back an extra $1,000, minus any wall repairs from cutting.

Werner also said homeowners must budget for other problems that may arise from unkempt or improperly installed vents, such as mildew and rot, or a booster for vents that open on the roof.

“That’s a hard one to say because it varies,” he said of fixing mildew damage. “It depends on how long it’s been going on and how frequently the dryer is being used. If the attic has good ventilation, [the amount of damage] isn’t horrible.

“But especially in the garage, mildew can easily spread across the wall,” he added. “If that’s the case, then you’ll have to think about cutting [parts of the wall out] and replacing it.”

If the vent needs to be rerouted through the roof, then homeowners will need to budget for the cost of a booster fan ($150 to $250) to make sure the lint and moisture are properly expelled.

“You can vent out the roof, which is becoming a more common practice,” Werner said. “There are length requirements on that, where it’s 35 feet max. But when you start adding elbows, which are turns in the vent, it’s more like 25 feet.”

“Each 90-degree turn in the vent is equivalent to 5 feet, and each 45-degree turn is equivalent to 2.5 feet, so you have to account for those [turns] too,” he added. “If it’s too long, you’ll have to install a booster fan that has a pressure sensor on it.”

Once the dryer vent is replaced or installed, most experts recommend homeowners have their dryer vent cleaned every one to two years alongside their HVAC maintenance, after they move into a new home, or anytime they complete a renovation as the dust and debris can be get caught in the vent.

Werner said homeowners can do also do a DIY cleaning if their vent opens on the side of their home, which would require them to simply disconnect the vent, clean it and reattach it.

“The [sidewall] vent is usually only a foot or two long, and they can disconnect it, wipe it out, and reconnect it,” he explained. “If your duct is metal, it will last for a very long time.”

Laundry workers hung out to dry | Editorial - NJ.com

laundry.indah.link

When we salute essential workers, we usually overlook the people who clean the bed sheets, patient gowns, scrubs and other protective equipment for our doctors and caregivers in hospitals and nursing homes.

It’s not a job many of us would choose, but it gets done by people making $11.50 an hour at places like Med-Apparel, a hospital laundry service in a block-long plant on the Arthur Kill in Perth Amboy.

These 120 workers struck last month just to get a 35- to 45-cent hourly increase and to demand compliance to state safety protocols at the massive shop, where 12 of them have fallen ill from COVID and one has died, according to their union.

The strike lasted only two days, and didn’t move the needle. They’re all back at work, risking their health for a poverty wage, for an employer they say flouts distancing rules at work stations. They have been classified as essential, but nobody calls them heroes. Something is amiss here

These are the workers we need to remember when Mitch McConnell revisits liability protections for employers in the next Congressional pie fight, as he seeks to slather owners of death traps in immunity against lawsuits.

Congressman Frank Pallone (D-6th Dist.) cites Med-Apparel as an example of why “you can’t exempt businesses from liability during COVID. If they follow state guidelines, fine – maybe they’re not liable for workers getting sick. But you’re going to have bad actors.”

The actors in this case won’t come to the phone to defend their work environment, which is curious. Med-Apparel is a division of Unitex, a fourth-generation family business that dominates this market in medical apparel cleaning. It is enormously profitable, highly-automated, and capably managed, which is why it is bewildering that an outfit with 13 plants (four in Jersey) and annual revenues of $150 million-plus is acting so minor league.

Pallone is also confounded, which is why he snapped off an angry letter two weeks ago — co-signed by the Middlesex County troika of Sen. Joe Vitale, Speaker Craig Coughlin, and Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez — to the father-and-sons executive team that owns and operates Unitex.

Their letter noted that Med-Apparel employees claim the company violates state COVID rules on worker safety, refuses to share virus case data at their Perth Amboy facility, and is “negotiating in bad faith,” as Pallone sees it. That last claim isn’t hard to make stick: The owners won’t agree to the measly pay hike unless workers agree to transition from a pension system to a 401(k) account, and the congressman is outraged.

“The response I got was totally inadequate and inappropriate,” Pallone said. “Their main objection is that the union won’t give up their ‘old world pension.’ People who work this long and this hard shouldn’t have to rely on the whims of the market in their retirement years. To use this as a bargaining chip for a modest raise is unacceptable.

“But the more pressing issue, for now, is they aren’t providing a safe work environment. This company is making money and has limited access to PPE, and they can’t protect their workers?”

Albert Arroyo, who leads negotiations for Workers United/SEIU, put it this way: “They won’t tell us who tests positive on the shop floor. They have no protocol for drivers. Ask them about ventilation system, they say, ‘We have lots of fans.’ And ask them about social distancing, they say they haven’t measured.”

This isn’t how Department of Labor commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo said it would go, when he warned that “if employers cannot follow the basic laws and take care of their workers’ health and safety, (the DOL) may need to get involved and see what other corners employers are cutting.” This would be a good time to start that process.

These people kept hospitals running during the darkest days of this pandemic, often working shoulder to shoulder, handling soiled and contaminated material seven days a week so that medical professionals and patients have a fighting chance.

Remove their link in this chain, and the heartbreaking calculus of death becomes even more unbearable. Most of us value and appreciate them. It’s vexing that their employers do not.

Global Laundry Scent Booster Market |Size, Trends, Forecast| 2020 – 2025 - Market Data Forecast

laundry.indah.link

Market Overview

The Global Laundry Scent Booster Market is likely to record a compound annual growth rate of xx% during the outlook period of 2020-2025.

Laundry scent boosters are used inside the washing machine to refresh the fabric. They provide lasting freshness to the fabric and can be used on different types of materials. Laundry fragrance enhancers are considered a newer version, whose presence on supermarket shelves has increased in recent years. Laundry fragrance enhancers are also available in trial size packages, allowing consumers to familiarize themselves with the product before investing in a larger package. Manufacturers are expanding their product portfolios and adding cross-functional products to gain an edge over their competition. For example, Procter & Gamble Company launched the Downy line of laundry flavor enhancers that contain fabric softener. It combines the benefits of a flavoring agent and a fabric softener. Continuous product innovation has led the laundry scent booster market to grow at a rapid rate. The emergence of e-commerce as a potential trading platform has been a major factor contributing to the development of the laundry scent booster market all over the world.

Recent Developments

In February 2016, Procter & Gamble Co. planned to begin selling a new line of Tide laundry detergent and Downy fabric conditioner targeting the fast growing segment of consumers who regularly wear sportswear but don't want to smell like the sports Hall. Rats Tide and Downy products will solve odor problems common to sportswear, such as sportswear deodorant.

In July 2019, Reckitt Benckiser launched “Vanish”, a detergent booster. Studies by leading marketing agencies Nielsen and Third Eye have found that over 60% of consumers are inherently dissatisfied with their laundry results despite using higher quality detergents. Vanish aims to fill the market void by providing housewives with the perfect laundry solution. A post-use consumer study showed that 9 out of 10 consumers after trying the product were motivated to buy it.

Market Growth

In developed markets, laundry scent boosters are seen as high-end laundry aids. While not yet very popular with low-income consumers in emerging markets, it is gaining ground at a rapid rate which is supposed to drive the market in the coming years. In addition, the repurchase rate of aromatic boosters in washing is relatively low among the middle class in emerging markets such as Southeast Asia and Latin America, which is supposed to increase during the conjecture period due to increased spending on styling products lifetime. The growing awareness of the availability of these products in the market has led to a higher level of penetration that is fueling the need for laundry scent boosters in the market. The market is awaiting a large number of new entrants due to the lucrative growth opportunities available in untapped areas.

Drivers

Changing apparel dynamics are expected to boost the laundry scent booster market during the forecast period. In addition, in recent times, the consumer spending on lifestyle products has increased significantly, which is likely to boost the sales of laundry flavor enhancers in the market. The growth in the laundry odor enhancer market is complemented by the increasing importance of maintaining personal hygiene. The participants on the supply side of the laundry scent booster market introduce innovative products and provide multifunctional properties that drive the demand in the world. The laundry scent enhancer not only masks the stinky odor, but also provides various pleasant and comforting scents to the fabric, which acts as a contributing factor in driving the demand for laundry scent booster business. The increasing availability of various e-commerce channels has augmented the reach of aroma enhancers in washing, resulting in a surge in sales. There are many factors behind the growth of the laundry scent booster market. It mainly includes an increase in the use of perfumes and deodorants. Increased use has made people more dependent on artificial fragrances. This has fueled the trend of using laundry scent boosters around the world. It is considered to be a convenient way to achieve a lasting scent on all clothes washed together.

Another factor that has boosted the growth of the global laundry scent booster market is the increase in people's disposable income. Rise in people's purchasing power helps them buy additional consumables, such as perfume enhancers for clothes. The increasing rate of laundry services and the competition between them is forcing the services to use different types of anti-odor agents. Many companies are focused on finding new and innovative ideas to gain high market share. Most of them try to incorporate excellent scents into their products to improve their sales. This restricts the sale of stand-alone fragrance enhancers. People prefer these types of laundry detergents and don't spend on odor enhancers. There is also an increase in DIY fragrance booster recipes. People make their own perfume enhancers for clothes at home, which discourages them from buying them in the markets.

Restraints

The increasing rate of laundry administrations, and the opposition between them, prompt the administrations to use different types of anti-odor agents. Either way, there are a few components that can limit the development of the laundry scent booster market. A notable obstacle to market development is the accessibility of unique cleaners on the market. Many organizations are focused on inventing new, imaginative plans to increase their presence in the market. Most of them try to merge amazing scents in their items with the end goal of improving the offers in mind. This limits the income of the particular perfume enhancers.
