Pandemic Shutters Family-Owned Laundry Business Operating in NYC Over 60 Years - NBC New York

laundry.indah.link

Another small business casualty of the coronavirus pandemic: Sun's Laundry closed its door for the final time on Saturday.

The laundry service operating out of a storefront on East 14th Street in Stuy Town closed for good after more than 60 years in business.

The family-owned business was known for its old school "hand laundry" method with stacks of clean clothes wrapped in butcher's paper and tied with string.

The 84-year-old owner, Robert Lee, was already considering retirement but the pandemic pushed him to the edge.

Jane Lee helps her father pack up the store that's been operated by their family since 1959.

Lee's daughter thinks it's not even worth it to inherit the family business.

"At this point with COVID-19 safety ramifications people are not working, they're working from home. So they're not washing their laundry or doing dry cleaning," she said. "Business has gone down hill."

Lee opened the business with his Chinese-born dad in 1959 and for a while he lived above the storefront. He was able to save up enough money to buy a home with his wife in Elhmurst, Queens.

But now, Lee says the one-hour commute is just too much to bare.

Europe on Monday, the laundry celebrations - Montgomery Advertiser

laundry.indah.link

Mickey Welsh Published 6:03 p.m. CT Aug. 30, 2020

CLOSE

On my first visit to Europe it hardly even registered but the more I visited the more I noticed the laundry. In Europe it’s still very common to dry laundry in the open air; on rooftops, from balconies or just from open windows, across narrow streets or along the façade of a building, cheerful strings of clothing offer a decorative touch to many a dreary Monday. Because despite vast differences in culture throughout Europe, from Germany to Portugal, from Greece to Poland, Monday is laundry day.

Even the girlfriend doesn’t own a dryer. Not for lack of space or money but by choice. I asked her once; a mistake I won’t make again anytime soon. Despite the sensible arguments it was a long lecture. Try never to catch a Dutch person on their high horse unless you have plenty of time.

So why do so many Europeans prefer to hang their laundry out a window rather than toss it in a dryer? I guess that in many cities is lack of space is a reason. If your million dollar Paris apartment is to small to have both, you probably prefer having a shower over having a dryer. In more rural Mediterranean areas a lack of reliable electricity could play a role. But at the end of the day the main reason seems to be that the people of Europe really want to dry their clothes the slow way: outside. According to the girlfriend her clothes and towels last a lot longer without being tumble dried. Freshly washed sheets also offer lovely shade on the balcony; cooler than dry cloth and with that wonderful clean smell.

Surprisingly, weather conditions do not deter the people of Europe from doing laundry. No matter how sunny the forecast is for the days later in the week, the lines get filled on Mondays, even if it’s a rainy Monday, or a snowy one, or even a freezing one, for that matter.

Walking through Barcelona on a drizzly afternoon once I looked up to see alleys full of laundry covered on the top with plastic sheets to keep them from getting even wetter. “Why not just wait a day?”, I wondered out loud. “Tradition”, the girlfriend shrugged with the tone of somebody who’s been hanging clothes in the rain all her life.

Practical or not, I’ve grown fond of the colorful fabric that makes inner cities all over Europe smell like they just stepped out of the shower. Mondays are my favorite days in Europe. How could they not be?

Comments, questions or suggestions are more than welcome. You can contact Mickey Welsh at mewelsh@gannett.com. You can follow "Wish I Was There" on Facebook for a daily dose of Europe at https://www.facebook.com/travelmickey1.

Stuy Town Laundry Business Shutters After 60 Years, A Result Of The COVID Crisis - Gothamist

laundry.indah.link

With a vintage red-and-white “Hand Laundry” sign and stacks of clean clothes wrapped in butcher’s paper tied with string, Sun’s Laundry on East 14th Street in Stuyvesant Town harkens back to a bygone era. The small storefront laundry and dry-cleaning service has been operating as a family business since 1959, when the current owner, Robert Lee, opened it with his father. Before that, his father ran a laundry in Boston, where he immigrated from China in the 1930s.

As business at Sun’s Laundry slowed in recent years and Lee has gotten older, he has considered closing the shop. But that decision was accelerated by COVID-19, says his nephew, Robert Gee. For Lee, 84, and his wife, Wai Hing Lee, 76, who works alongside him, commuting to the shop from their home in Elmhurst, Queens, was too big of a risk during the pandemic.

The couple closed the shop in mid-March when the city shut down and only opened it again on August 1st in order to allow customers to pick up any clothing they had left there. After Saturday, it will close for good.

“With stay-at-home, there’s no need for work clothes,” said Gee. “And even earlier than that, the rise of business-casual attire in the workplace has had an impact on the Chinese laundry business because there’s less dry cleaning and less pressed blouses needed for work.”

The Partnership for New York City has estimated that up to a third of New York City’s small businesses will close permanently due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and immigrant communities have been hit especially hard. Laundromats were deemed essential businesses during the pandemic but some still closed, at least temporarily, due to business slowing down or fear of the virus.

For Gee, whose maternal and paternal grandparents both opened laundry services upon arriving in the U.S., the closure of his uncle’s shop is a moment to reflect on the role that family-owned laundries have served in his community.

“We’re very, very fortunate as a family,” said Gee, who works in marketing. “I’m the youngest of six and each of us has done very well for ourselves in our respective careers. We’re very appreciative of the laundromat or Chinese hand laundry business because it supported thousands of families to get them through the tough times.”

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Chinese immigrants opened laundry services across the country, driven by a variety of factors, including the low startup capital and language skills needed to open laundering businesses, as well as discrimination that barred them from many other types of work. Although some Chinese Americans shifted into the restaurant business when steam-powered laundry machines became available in the 1920s, the laundry industry continued to be dominated by Chinese immigrants for years, with some 3,550 Chinese-owned laundries operating in New York City at the start of the Great Depression. Professional organizations such as the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association and the Chinese Hand Laundry Alliance formed in the 1930s to protect the businesses, which were major employers in the Chinese community. They fought back against a 1933 law that sought to drive Chinese laundries out of business by requiring them to be operated by U.S. citizens.

Early on, Gee says, his uncle and grandparents lived above Sun’s Laundry, but eventually, they were able to save up to buy a home in Elmhurst, which the Lee’s still live in today. Their two children have also helped out with the family business over the years, but they had no plans to take it over themselves after the couple retired, as Robert Lee did with his father.

Dry cleaning and laundry businesses have become a less exclusively Chinese industry than they once were, although they are still largely immigrant-owned. One factor in this trend may be greater economic mobility in the Chinese community, which helps explain the wave of Chinese restaurant closures that was taking place prior to the pandemic, as younger generations declined to take over the family business.

Gee says he’s grateful he was able to have a white-collar career, but, “You gotta pay homage to what [the laundry business has] done to help Chinese immigrants over the years and help them acclimate to life in the United States.”

Miracle workers: Dallas church serves as clinic, pantry and laundry for neighborhoods hard hit by COVID - Worcester Mag

laundry.indah.link

DALLAS — I've discovered a contemporary rendition of the New Testament's "five loaves and two fishes" story taking place at Cornerstone Baptist Church as it works daily miracles in one of Dallas' poorest communities.

This church, long a beacon of light to South Dallas, knows how to multiply modest resources into colossal gains. As COVID-19 has challenged it in ways as unprecedented as the pandemic itself, Cornerstone has doubled down on its work.

The megachurches tend to make the news, but all over the city, modest places of worship like Cornerstone provide thousands of lifelines — especially to those who lack those basics that most of us take for granted.

Cornerstone doesn't ask if you're a church member as a condition for lending a hand; it doesn't even care if you are from a surrounding neighborhood.

The church listens to what you need and tries to help.

"In a neighborhood with limited resources, we try to be the clearinghouse for everything," Pastor Chris Simmons said as we sat in his sanctuary on Martin Luther King Boulevard. "People knock on the door to say, 'I'm going through a hard time. I really want to work. Can you help?'"

Simmons and his right-hand man, Donald Wesson, ticked off the church's ministries: community kitchen, clothing closet and showers, health clinic, transitional housing, afterschool and summer learning, laundromat, job assistance, even a bike shop.

The list is even longer than that. And not even a pandemic has halted the services — although it has reshaped many of them.

How big a staff does Cornerstone employ to do all that? "You're looking at it," Simmons laughed, gesturing to himself and Wesson, who oversees the church's nonprofit ministries arm, Cornerstone Community Development Corporation.

Simmons and Wesson do the Lord's work by mining and multiplying every possible resource: AmeriCorps and AARP work programs, church and neighborhood volunteers, and perhaps most important, the partnerships Simmons has built with churches across North Texas.

Since March, Simmons estimates, more than a third of the people among the church's regular 600 worshippers have contracted the coronavirus and about 75% have had a relative come down with it.

One of the church's deacons recently lost his sister and brother-in-law to the virus; Simmons presided over the funeral of one of Cornerstone's members just a few days ago.

The virus has swept through both the church's transitional housing for formerly incarcerated men and its home for pregnant teens. All have recovered, but several were in the hospital for weeks.

With more than 50% of the adults in the neighborhoods around Cornerstone raising grandchildren, Simmons said, his greatest fear is that kids returning to school will then infect these older caregivers.

"We are going to see a lot of death and I think it's going to be really devastating" because "now who will raise these kids?" he asked.

The church's helping hands have been needed more than ever since March — not just because of illness but due to the financial strain COVID has created.

. Simmons said that many of his congregation members have jobs that don't allow for sheltering in place. "You can't quarantine when you are living on the margins." People, many of them already facing health problems, simply press on — and that contributes to the continued spread of the pandemic, Simmons said.

When I arrived for our first interviews Monday, Simmons was pushing a huge cart loaded with food items up an incline and into the church. "Better get a running start," he joked in the blistering heat.

Before the pandemic hit, the church's kitchen operation served 175 to 200 meals, mostly to the homeless, five days a week. Now volunteers are handing out 450 "grab and go" food kits, many to people whom Simmons describes as first-timers "who never dreamed of being in a soup line."

The same is true for the church's low-cost laundromat. Simmons said many of the neighbors are flat broke, so at present the services are free.

He sees the same scene at Cornerstone's medical clinic, whose services include allowing people to stay current with their medication. "We are seeing more people than before," Simmons said. "People are now worried about going to the hospital and getting sick."

Even as COVID has curtailed some of the church's ministries, its leaders have found workarounds. For instance, the fear of contagion has shut down the community laptops made available at its community kitchen.

Now people gather outside that facility to use the church Wi-Fi and charge their phones.

Simmons and Wesson returned repeatedly during our conversations to South Dallas' poor — or nonexistent — internet service. Despite multiple reports on the digital divide, areas south of Interstate 30 still lack reliable and affordable high-speed internet.

These inequities even affect worship because so many members can't access the church's virtual services.

After Ivan Tucker and his fellow praise singers ran through their part for Sunday's taping, he told me that he's one of the many in the congregation who is temporarily out of work due to COVID-19. Furloughed from his city of Dallas job, Tucker said he is able to keep the faith partly because of Simmons's influence.

He described the pastor as a mentor and hero — but also a down-to-earth guy. "He's can-do. He always has an answer and a solution, no matter the problem," Tucker said.

Simmons, raised in Washington, D.C., came to Cornerstone as he was wrapping up his studies at Dallas Theological Seminary. He planned only a brief layover there, but God had a different timeline.

Once Simmons realized that Cornerstone had seen too many preachers quickly come and go, he told his wife, "It must be difficult to attend a church where people feel that no one wants to pastor them."

They made a commitment to stay — and 32 years later, they are still here.

Wesson's Cornerstone journey is uncannily similar to the pastor's.

After graduating from Trinity University in San Antonio, he worked in Austin on behalf of the homeless. But the job didn't feel like the right fit, so his mother, who was aware of Simmons' work, suggested the two meet.

"He served me Kool-Aid," Wesson laughed. "That was so real to me ... not cute or proper but authentic." Eight years later, Wesson is as passionate about South Dallas as are the church's long-timers.

"This is the opposite of what the world paints places like South Dallas to be," Wesson said. "There are people here who care, who want to do better — people here who just need opportunity.

As program director of the church's nonprofit arm, Wesson writes grant proposals, raises funds and problem-solves. His goal is to figure out every possible way to "save a dollar here to do something else with it there."

In addition to the church's many ministries, Wesson watches over its part in the Dallas Catalyst Project, a three-year commitment by the Real Estate Council Foundation to help with neighborhood revitalization efforts around Cornerstone.

Wesson attributes Cornerstone's daily miracles — making so much out of so little — to Simmons's skill at partnering with other pastors, including those whose congregations don't resemble the South Dallas church. Places such as Grace Bible Church, Park Cities Baptist, Watermark Community Church, Valley Ranch Baptist and Stonebriar Community Church.

"Pastor Chris has a gift for finding men and women of good heart and putting them to work," Wesson said. "We recognize the need is great, and we can't do all these things ourselves.

Not just Simmons but everyone I met at Cornerstone — the young dancers and their families, the adult singers, the behind-the scenes volunteers — leans into their church work with the same optimism and joy.

We might all take a moment to give thanks to Cornerstone and the many other places of worship that are working miracles in these hard times.

How to get the laundry room renovations you'll love - Santa Clarita Valley Signal

laundry.indah.link

Does it seem like your hamper is always full and the washing machine is running constantly? You may not be imagining it. Laundry Butler for You, a wash, dry and fold service, says the average household washes 50 pounds of laundry a week and 6,000 articles of clothing every year. Families with children at home are doing laundry most often, and those with pets may find there is ample laundry to wash as well.

With so much laundry being generated, homeowners may want to consider paying extra attention to the space in the house where their clothing is being cleansed. Laundry room renovations may not top homeowners’ priority lists, but it may be time to give these rooms another look.

Assess your equipment

If your appliances are aging, a laundry room renovation can start with an investment in new appliances. New models have large capacity loads, tend to be energy-efficient and could have innovative features that help fit with your laundry lifestyle. Purchasing front-loading models also can free up design space, as you can install a counter directly above the units, saving room for other items like drying racks.

Figure out your room needs

A laundry room need not be limited to laundry only. Many homeowners make large laundry rooms catch-all spaces that can serve as utility or mud rooms, pantry overflows, or off-season storage areas. Consider the functions you want the room to serve and include those ideas in your designs.

Add some natural light

If possible, include a window in your laundry room. Natural light can help make the room more enjoyable. It also can help you identify stains on clothes that need to be addressed and make it easier to fold matching items like socks.

Think about a utility sink

Many washing machines drain out directly to waste pipes in the floor or wall, but you also can opt to have them empty into a utility sink. This sink also provides a convenient place to handwash items, clean tools or paintbrushes, or store items that perhaps you do not want to bring into a bathroom or kitchen sink.

Include some flair

This utilitarian space need not be boring or bereft of design elements. Mirror your home’s style in the laundry room, and include wall hangings, plants, accent items, and even task lighting. Play up certain features with a bold floor tile or brightly colored walls.

Updating laundry rooms can be a great way to make doing laundry more enjoyable and efficient. (MC)

Pink Water In St. Charles Safe, But Could Stain Laundry: City - St. Charles, IL Patch

laundry.indah.link

ST. CHARLES, IL — Some St. Charles residents must have thought they were still dreaming Friday morning when they saw pink and purple water pouring out of their faucets.

Officials said Friday afternoon that they received reports of discolored water from one area of the city, but did not specify where. Alicia Hiebert, who provided Patch with a photo of pink water that came out of her faucet, said she lives on the city's west side.

Coronavirus Cases Surge In St. Charles During August

Water from fire hydrants in the area was clear when public works employees tested it, officials said, adding the discoloration is likely being caused by iron and other minerals that were stirred up by changes in water pressure.

Officials said the city will offer residents a free stain remover if their clothes are affected by the discolored water. Residents should run their faucets and hoses until the water is clear, officials said.

When asked if she would use the pink water that city officials are saying is safe, Hiebert said, "Heck no I'm not going to use it!"

Use These 7 Tips & Tricks To Speed Up The Laundry Process - SWAAY

laundry.indah.link

If anyone says that they actually like doing laundry, then they're either lying or a bit mad. All the sorting, washing, waiting, ironing and folding is no one's idea of a good time. Still, unless you're constantly buying new clothes instead of washing them (terribly wasteful idea), then you'll just have to grin and bear the laundry process and handle it as best you can. Luckily, however, there are some pretty useful tips that will actually speed up doing laundry and make the entire experience a little less painful.

  • Unbutton any shirts with a button to avoid stretching the fabric around the hole
  • Put bras in a special wash bag to avoid the clasps snagging onto other pieces of delicate clothing. Also, zip up jeans and jackets before washing them for the same reason.
  • Separate colored and white items before washing to avoid the lighter things turning a strange shade. Some clothing can "bleed" in the wash when the dye mixes with the water and this can affect your brand new white T-shirt, for example.
  • Delicate materials like wool and silk require their own wash cycles because they often can't be washed on the same speed and temperature as cotton items, for instance. Wool and silk are better with a cold, slow wash, and can be shrunk or stretched if washed on a higher setting.
  • Have your detergent prepared first. Make sure you've got enough powder or liquid detergent before starting the wash, otherwise all that effort will be for nothing! You could try using pre-measured laundry pods (can be called caps or discs) to make the laundry process much quicker.
  • It's always best to attend to stains as soon as they happen, as it's much harder to remove something when it's been sitting on your garment for several days. Here's a list of household items that are great at removing food and drink stains. If you can, pre-treat the stain and then wash afterward if you really want to get rid of the stain.
  • Check the label on your garments before washing, as these will tell you how to wash, iron, and even dry them. The labels are made by the manufacturers, so they know best!

As you can see, laundry can be so much faster if you plan a bit beforehand and know exactly what you're doing from the get-go. Even if you're not lucky enough to have a washing machine in your home, the same tips still apply to getting your laundry done at a laundromat (but wear a mask and take more caution when using the machines). Of course, some companies even offer to pick up and drop off your laundry for a fee, but sometimes it's good to learn these chores yourself and also ensure that no one else ruins your clothes by mistake. Who knows? Maybe you'll grow to love doing laundry one day… but we can't imagine that day will ever come.

PWS Laundry Launches Major Expansion - GlobeSt.com

laundry.indah.link

PWS Laundry has launched a major expansion with plans to open 30 to 50 new locations nationwide. Despite the pandemic and economic dislocation, laundromats provide strong returns and fundamentals. They are also a good opportunity for retail owners looking to secure sable and flexible tenants.

“The fundamentals of laundromats are stronger than ever,” Brad Steinberg, co-president of PWS Laundry, tells GlobeSt.com. “They have always provided a good return on investment for operators, and with landlords being more flexible on lease terms and more generous on tenant improvements, the economics have gotten even better.”

Few tenants are immune to the impacts of a recession, but laundromats tend to be resilient through market dislocations. “While laundromats can experience some revenue dips in a down economy or pandemic, they have proven to be more resistant than most other businesses.  They remain open and in fact have been classified as an essential business because of the necessary service they provide,” says Steinberg. “This stability is attractive to landlords that have vacancies in their centers.”

The current market dynamics make this an ideal time for the company to expand. The company could capitalize on flexible landlords and more favorable lease terms and rates. “One of the main reasons we are looking at a major expansion is because many landlords have become more flexible,” says Steinberg. “Rents have come down a bit, and landlords are willing to contribute to build-out costs.  Many landlords have been convinced of the benefit of laundromats. They pay their rent, they are Amazon and pandemic resistant, they attract new customers to shopping centers, and they will be around for 20-plus years.”

PWS Laundry is expanding in any market throughout the country, focusing specifically on markets with density and a high concentration of renters. In terms of the physical space, the firm is also flexible. “We are open to all types of buildings,” says Steinberg. “Laundromats have been successful as freestanding tenants, in small strips as well as large grocery anchored centers.  The great thing about laundromats is the flexibility in the spaces they occupy. We just need good parking, good visibility and good demographics.”

Bars, gyms, theaters can reopen in Pima County with laundry list of restrictions - Arizona Daily Star

laundry.indah.link

In preparation of reopening, Peter Murphy cleans the floors at Desert Sports and Fitness, 2480 N. Pantano Rd., in Tucson, Ariz. on August 27, 2020. After being closed for a second time during the pandemic for two months, Desert Sports and Fitness is reopening Friday Aug. 28 from 6am to 3pm. Nothing has really changed since the first closure of gyms, said Kelly Shupe, manager of Desert Sports and Fitness. Every other piece of equipment is closed to allow for social distancing as well as equipment spread apart. Cleaning measures and signs have been added as well as extra sanitizing stations for cleaning equipment before and after each members use. "We have also added that members must wear either a mask or face shield while in the gym," added Shupe.

As of right now, bars in nine of the state's 15 counties, including Pima, can reopen.

But don't expect them to look and operate the way they did before the governor ordered them shuttered in March.

No dancing.

No karaoke.

No darts or pool.

And forget about wandering around in hopes of finding someone with whom to hook up.

Put simply, they have to operate more like a restaurant, complete with food. And the number of customers is limited to just half normal capacity.

The nine counties on Thursday all have achieved at least "moderate" status as far as the spread of COVID-19. And that permits not just bars but also gyms, fitness centers, movie theaters and water parks to reopen.

Only thing is, they have to agree to a laundry list of restrictions as state health officials say there still is a risk from the coronavirus. So for each of these businesses, the mission now is finding ways to open with limited capacity and limited activities and still make a living.

Some Tucson businesses are using the reopening opportunity to get creative.

In downtown, Cobra Arcade Bar and Senae Thai Bistro are partnering to increase their space and resources. The businesses are in the process of opening up a back window that connects their buildings, so that Senae can serve its Thai food at Cobra.

“Our seating capacity has been reduced to less than half. The dining room is so small,” Senae’s owner Dee Buizer said. “This way we can open and hopefully increase our sales, because we sure need that.”

Rebecca Safford of Tucson's Tap & Bottle said that plans were already in the works for opening their west-side beer garden, Westbound at the MSA Annex, which has outdoor seating and a host of nearby restaurant vendors that will satisfy the food component of the stipulation.

She plans to keep the bar area of her two locations of Tap & Bottle closed until the state enters its next phase of coronavirus reopening. So far she’s been able to keep the businesses going through takeout and delivery sales.

“Even if the (COVID-19) numbers are moderate, … people’s behavior seems to be a little more on board with following the rules and doing what they have to do to go out to a place,” she said. “I feel we can safely do Westbound, so that’s the one that we’re gonna focus on.”

Though Safford said she’s worried that the number of coronavirus infections rising now that University of Arizona students are back in town, she said there comes a point when business owners need to do what they need to do to survive.

“I get both sides. I understand why people wanna stay closed and I understand why other people might want to reopen,” she said. “Can we open safely in the best way possible and try to remain a business?”

Other counties in moderate status include Apache, Cochise, Coconino, La Paz, Maricopa, Navajo and Yavapai.

The infection rates in Greenlee County are so low that the Arizona Department of Health Services says they have achieved "minimal spread" status. That will give businesses there even more flexibility.

Pinal County did not make the cut as expected. Arizona Health Director Cara Christ said a new set of test results received late Wednesday kept it in the category of "substantial" risk of spread.

Christ acknowledged that test results from inmates are included in the county's tallies. But she doubted that these infections are what has kept the county from moving into the "moderate" category.

Dos and don'ts

It's not just bars in these nine counties that will again be allowed to operate, albeit in a scaled-back fashion.

Gyms and fitness centers can also reopen their doors to half of the normal capacity, with requirements for other restrictions. Ditto movie theaters, water parks and tubing operations.

But traditional bars and nightclubs won't be able to reopen as they used to operate until the county rate for positive tests comes back at 3%.

Still, there are options for bars that can reconfigure how they do business.

The list of dos and don'ts is extensive. And it goes beyond the ban on dancing, singing and games.

It starts when people arrive.

The state wants at least 10 square feet for each person in the waiting area, with anyone in the queue required to mask up. Overflow has to go outside, even to the point of would-be customers waiting in their cars.

Customers can choose between sitting at the bar or a table with the obligatory six-foot distance between parties. But once someone is seated, that's it — except to go to the bathroom. And that, in turn, requires putting a mask back on.

Salad bars and buffets where people can serve themselves are forbidden.

And customers are unlikely to find a bottle of ketchup on the table. It's not a gourmet thing. It's just that the health department wants single-service helpings, whether in packets or small bowls.

Even the experience of paying is likely to be altered, with staff required to wipe down any pens, touchpads or other hard surfaces between each use.

Gyms and fitness centers present a different set of hurdles. Here, too, it starts at the door with a requirement for customers to submit to temperature checks or at least be screened for COVID-19 symptoms.

They can operate only at 25% capacity except in Greenlee County where 50% is OK.

Masks are required at all times, along with physical distancing of at least six feet.

There can be classes for Pilates, Zumba and other fitness exercises. But expect to find markers on the floor to demonstrate where people can safely stand.

This reopening is round two for Desert Sports and Fitness, which welcomed back clients in May before Gov. Doug Ducey ordered such businesses closed again on June 29.

The gym, at 2480 N. Pantano Road, is opening Friday, Aug. 28, with every other piece of equipment closed to allow for social distancing, said Manager Kelly Shupe. Cleaning measures and signs have been added as well as extra sanitizing stations for cleaning equipment before and after each use.

On the entertainment front, movie theaters can fill up to half their seats — but only if they can do so by limiting groups to no more than 10, separating groups by at least six feet, and keeping every other row empty.

Customers should count on having to wear a mask other than while eating or drinking at a seat. And look for more time between shows to avoid crowds and allow better air circulation.

Water parks also can operate at 50% capacity, with distancing between deck chairs and other actions to keep participants apart.
