The problem of dingy, gray laundry is not foreign to my mailbox. In fact, it’s a subject that shows up a lot. Why do bedsheets, towels, socks and T-shirts turn dull and gray, feel stiff and lose absorbency?

It’s the buildup of detergent, fabric softeners and minerals from hard water that were not removed with regular washing methods. Add to that the accumulation of sweat, body oil, deodorant, lotions, shampoo and conditioners that adhere to the fibers of the fabric, and what do we get? We get linens and clothes we think are clean but might come out with lingering odors and poor appearance.

It’s our laundry habits that cause these dingy, gray results:

•Using cold water for every type of laundry load.

• Allowing bed linens and towels to become heavily soiled.

• Using too much detergent, fabric softeners and scent enhancers.

• Using laundry detergent that does not contain enzymes to break down soil.

• Never cleaning the washer.

“Laundry stripping” is a process of removing all the buildup and getting down to the bare fabric.

It should be done only a few times per year or when clothes and linens begin to show signs of getting stiff and dull.

Caution: The process of laundry stripping is not suitable for all fabrics. Do not attempt to strip any fabric that cannot tolerate hot water; delicate fabrics such as silk, spandex or lace that require hand-washing or the gentle cycle; or colored items that are not colorfast.

STEP 1

Start with clean laundry that has been separated into whites and colors. Do not mix whites with colors in this process. You can strip one average-size load of laundry at a time in a tub, sink or bin that is large enough to allow the items freedom of movement during the process.

STEP 2

Fill the bathtub or container halfway with the hottest water available from the tap. Ideally, the water should be 140 degrees. If your water heater cannot be adjusted for the process, be prepared to add enough boiling water to make sure the water is very hot.

STEP 3

For a standard-size bathtub, add 1/4 cup of washing soda, 1/4 cup of borax and 1/2 cup of heavy-duty laundry detergent with enzymes. Be sure to read the label: Popular brands of detergent with enzymes include Persil, Biz and Tide. If yours is a larger or deeper tub, double these amounts, making sure the ratio is always twice as much detergent as the other products.

STEP 4

Drop the items to be stripped into the hot water, making sure they are open and can move freely. Do not overload. Use a wooden spoon or broom handle to make sure everything is submerged and completely saturated.

STEP 5

Now, the process begins. Once per hour and until the water is cooled completely (three to four hours or longer), stir the items with the spoon or broom handle. The color of the water might be shocking (even gross).

STEP 6

As satisfying as this process can be, you might find this disgusting. Just keep in mind the dark water is all of the dirty, graying, dulling residues that have built up in the linens and clothing. It really does look similar to swamp water. It’s time to pull the plug. Let it drain.

STEP 7

Wring and squeeze as much water out of the items as possible, and transfer them to the washer.

STEP 8

Set the washer to cold and run a normal cycle, with an extra rinse if possible. Do not add any detergent or other products.

STEP 9

Dry the laundry as you normally do in an automatic dryer, on a clothesline or on a drying rack.

STEP 10

Be amazed because the results will be that dramatic.

Redondo Beach diner Eat at Joe's is continuing to serve customers outdoors despite Los Angeles County shutting down both indoor and outdoor dining, and the restaurant owner has unfurled a giant banner mocking Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Draped over the diner's normal sign is a giant banner that reads "The French Laundry" and "Patio Dining," complete with the restaurant's signature font and color scheme. Underneath the banner is another one that announces the diner's normal outdoor dining service.

This Redondo Beach restaurant has a not so subtle message for CA. Jordan told KTLA no one has ordered him to stop serving customers since the ban took effect, and said he has been following all guidelines for serving customers including spacing out tables and requiring employees to wear masks.

“COVID is a terrible thing. There is no argument there,” Jordan told KTLA. “But I’m not sure that picking on restaurants to such a degree is the answer. It hasn’t been proven through any medical numbers that eating outside is causing this. So why do they have to close us down? We are following all the rules to a T, and still they want to close us down.”

He stated that he's defying the orders specifically because his employees need the money ahead of the holiday season.

“We’re still open because I have very loyal employees who have been with me for many, many years, and putting them out of work without any government aid or stimulus or help four weeks before Christmas time is just not OK in any way, shape or form with me,” he said. “The fact that they are letting other businesses be open 20%, or 25%, and penalizing us doesn’t seem fair.”

Los Angeles County has come under fire for tightening its health order to prohibit outdoor dining, which is something no other California county has done amid the current surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations across the state.

Restaurant owners have tried to lobby Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti to intervene, but the decision was made at the county and not city level. Pasadena was the only Los Angeles County city to continue to allow outdoor dining since the city is under the jurisdiction of its own health department, but officials may suspend outdoor dining there as well after a horde of people across Southern California descended on the city to eat outdoors.

Dry the laundry as you normally do in an automatic dryer, on a clothesline or on a drying rack.

Be amazed, because the results will be that dramatic.

Sure, you wash your dirty clothes, but have you tried the hot new "quarancleaning" trend of laundry stripping?

Laundry-stripping video tutorials have taken off on TikTok and other social media outlets, and for good reason. The videos start by showing a bathtub full of crystal-clear water, to which is added a load of supposedly clean laundry and a few magic ingredients. After a few time-lapsed hours go by, the water is a dingy gray-brown and the clothes are, presumably, really clean.

If you're wondering how to strip laundry and whether it's safe, you're not alone. Here's what you need to know about this viral cleaning trend and how to pull it off at home.

What is laundry stripping?

Laundry stripping is essentially a deep-cleaning process that rids your clothing and linens of all the nasty gunk, body oil, dirt, fabric softener, and other residue that may not be removed by regular washing machines.

"It provides physical proof that our regular laundry methods might not be working as well as we thought they were," says Michelle Hansen, a professional organizer and cleaning expert with Practical Perfection.

Laundry stripping is actually a well-established cleaning process used by big companies like P&G, which makes laundry detergents and other household products.

According to Jennifer Ahoni, a senior scientist for Tide who works in the P&G Fabric Care laboratory, the company's scientists use a special heavy-duty detergent instead of borax, baking soda, and regular detergent, but the goal and outcome is the same: superclean fabrics, without any unwanted residue.

"We strip fabrics before testing, and we also strip fabrics between testing," she says. "We do this in order to eliminate contamination from chemicals applied to fabrics during the manufacturing process on new items and the transfer of laundry product residues on washed items between testing."

How to strip laundry at home

If you want to try laundry stripping yourself, it's pretty easy to get started with the following cleaning products you likely already have around the house:

• Powdered laundry detergent
• Borax
• Baking soda

People use varying amounts of each of these ingredients, but some of the most popular recipes call for around half-cup detergent, quarter-cup borax, and quarter-cup baking soda for a bathtub full of water.

In your own DIY laundry-stripping formula, each chemical has a role to play, Ahoni says.

The borax and baking soda help release hard-water minerals trapped in fabrics, the detergent breaks down and removes any buildup, and the hot water helps to loosen residues and other dirt, she says.

Start by filling a bathtub or a large sink with hot water, then add the detergent, borax, and baking soda. Stir the water (you can use a large spoon or a broomstick). Toss your clean laundry in, making sure you don't overflow the tub, then stir the water again to make sure your laundry is submerged.

You can check on your laundry's progress every few hours, but you'll want to soak your clothes for at least five or six hours. By then, the water will probably have turned a dark, murky color.

Afterward, wring all the dirty water out of your laundry, drain the tub, toss the items into the washing machine and run them through the rinse cycle without any detergent. Dry and fold as normal.

Is laundry stripping safe?

While laundry stripping isn't likely to ruin your linens, it can cause bright colors to fade over time, so you'll want to do this sparingly with colors. You'll also want to avoid using laundry stripping for delicates or anything that you'd otherwise take to the dry cleaner.

Before stripping, make sure to read the labels on your laundry carefully, since hot water is typically a no-go for fabrics like polyester or nylon.

White towels, bedsheets, and other linens, on the other hand, are fair game. You can even try laundry stripping on items like pillows, comforters, and blankets.

When you wear the laundry-stripped clothes or sleep under the sheets later, your skin isn't likely to be irritated by all the various powders used in the process. That said, if your skin is extra sensitive, you'll want to use a fragrance-free or unscented detergent.

How often to strip laundry

"Laundry stripping is a long process and should only be done to clothes a few times a year to avoid damage to clothes," Hansen says.

Bottom line: Though laundry stripping is kind of fun and the results are dramatic, it's probably not something you're going to do every day.

When photos circulated earlier this month of Gov. Gavin Newsom dining at the swanky French Laundry restaurant for a birthday party, Californians got a glimpse of the well-known but rarely observed coziness between lobbyists and politicians.

The dinner gave fuel to critics of the governor’s coronavirus restrictions, who pointed to the hypocrisy of Newsom mingling in a 12-person group as he told the rest of the state to avoid seeing family and friends for Thanksgiving.

It also thrust into the spotlight Newsom’s longtime relationship with Jason Kinney, the California lobbyist who hosted the party to celebrate his 50th birthday.

At a press conference earlier this month, Newsom described Kinney as “a friend that I’ve known for almost 20 years.”

Their relationship dates back to the now-governor’s days in San Francisco City Hall, where Newsom served as a county supervisor starting in the late 90s and then as mayor from 2004 to 2011.

Kinney’s profile has risen along with Newsom’s. He has worked for years as a political consultant for Newsom and other California Democrats, and partnered closely with him to legalize marijuana through a successful 2016 ballot measure campaign.

When Newsom was elected governor, Kinney worked on his transition team and then joined the newly-formed lobbying firm Axiom Advisors.

The firm has since reported more than $10.8 million in payments received during its first two years in operation and boasts a list of well-heeled clients, including marijuana firms, Facebook and Netflix.

Kinney and his wife, Mary Gonsalves Kinney, are close with the governor and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom, who also attended the party. Gonsalves Kinney has been a personal stylist to Siebel Newsom and has a considerable following on Instagram, where she identifies herself in her bio as a “stylist, writer, feminist/activist for social justice.”

Kinney’s relationship with Newsom helped net him a spot on Capitol Weekly’s list of the top 100 most influential people in Sacramento, a high-profile ranking of top political power brokers.

He has also made the news in less favorable ways.

Registration failures

In 2008, as Barack Obama was on the cusp of winning the White House for the first time, Kinney, who was working at public affairs firm California Strategies, was put in charge of a publicity campaign on the behalf of an exiled sheikh from the United Arab Emirates seeking to gain power over his brother.

As The Sacramento Bee reported in 2013, Sheikh Khalid bin Saqr Al Qasimi hired California Strategies to introduce him to U.S. government officials and mount a public affairs strategy that cast him as an American ally in his effort to gain power in Ras al-Khaimah, one of the seven monarchies that make up the United Arab Emirates.

After winning the election, Obama pledged not to take money for his inauguration celebration from representatives of foreign interests. As a representative of the sheikh, California Strategies registered with the federal government as a foreign agent, but Kinney did not, as was required.

According to reporting by the Guardian in 2010, California Strategies was brought on to help the sheikh with what the paper called a “bloodless coup” by suggesting that the then-leaders of Ras al-Khaimah, the sheikh’s brother and father, were in league with Iran and breaking international sanctions to support its nuclear ambitions.

Within months of taking on the sheikh as a client, Kinney and his wife gave $52,000 for Obama’s inauguration. The two traveled to Washington for the event, according to Bee reporting. The sheikh was there, too.

Over two years, the sheikh spent more than $3 million on the campaign, including $25,000 a month to Kinney. Federal filings revealed the firm dispensed gifts to more than a dozen officials, including Gov. Jerry Brown, Sen. Barbara Boxer and Rep. Nancy Pelosi.

The sheikh’s effort to install himself as leader of Ras-Al Khaimah was, apparently, unsuccessful. After his father’s death in 2010, his brother, Sheikh Saul, gained control and remains in power today. Sheikh Khalid’s contract with California Strategies ended shortly after.

Several years later, in 2013, California’s political watchdog agency, the Fair Political Practices Commission, fined Kinney and two of his-then partners at California Strategies for hiding some of their business from public view by not registering with the state as lobbyists. Kinney, the firm and the other partners were fined a total of $40,500 for the violation.

Tax problems

The same year, the Bee reported the IRS had filed liens of more than $840,000 against Kinney for federal income taxes he owed from 2007 to 2010.

Documents filed with Sacramento County, where Kinney lives, show he paid off more than $840,000 in tax liens in 2009.

A spokesperson for Kinney did not respond to questions about his relationship with Newsom or details about his clients, but referred The Bee to an earlier statement about the party: “This was a small, intimate 12-person dinner with family and a few close friends to celebrate a 50th birthday.”

Newsom has apologized for attending the party, which he says was bigger than he expected.

“As soon as I sat down at the larger table, I realized it was a little larger group than I had anticipated,” he said. “Instead of sitting down, I should have stood up and walked back, got in my car and drove back to my house.”

From an ethics perspective, it’s important that Newsom says he paid for his own meal, said Bob Stern, former president of the Center for Governmental Studies who helped craft California’s political ethics laws.

He noted Newsom doesn’t seem concerned with Kinney’s ethical lapses, which Stern pointed out never resulted in punishment more serious than fines.

“He’s had a close relationship with Newsom all along,” Stern said. “Doesn’t seem to bother Newsom at all.”

One person who has known Newsom both personally and politically for many years said others have tried to discourage the relationship.

“It’s a mystery not just to me, but to many other longtime friends of Newsom’s, why he goes out of his way to allow Kinney to hang around him and just brazenly profit from his association with him,” said the source, who asked to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the topic.

“All you have to do is Google Kinney to understand the cloud of scandal and ethical lapses that hangs over his head. Gavin’s been warned about Kinney for years, that he’s bad news waiting to happen. And now this. None of us get it.”

Beyond the coronavirus concerns, the dinner also highlighted Newsom’s close relationship with key Capitol interests. Two representatives of the influential California Medical Association, CEO Dustin Corcoran and lobbyist Janus Norman, also attended the celebration, where images showed guests in close contact without wearing masks.

Dinners with lobbyists are common for politicians from both parties, but the optics are still bad, said longtime political operative and government ethics expert Dan Schnur, a former chairman of the state’s political ethics watchdog commission.

“Voters hear the word lobbyist and automatically react with suspicion. It reminds them that other people are getting access to powerful politicians that they are not getting themselves,” he said. “You could make a fairly damaging campaign commercial to run against any politician being part of a dinner like this one.”

Jim Brulte, former California Senate Republican leader who worked with Kinney while they were both at lobbying firm California Strategies, said Kinney is a skilled political strategist.

“I’ve always found him to be upfront. He’s personable, he’d give you the shirt off his back if you needed it,” Brulte said. “I have a great deal of respect for him. He’s a Democrat through and through. Even though we’re on opposite sides of nearly every political battle, I admire political warriors. He’s an A-player.”

Michael Bustamante, a partner at California Strategies, praised Kinney’s work and his skill as a lobbyist, and said his relationship with Newsom is the product of years of working together.

“This is a relationship that predates Jason being a lobbyist and Gavin being a governor. That’s what you see there. Just because you’re an elected or because you work for a firm doesn’t negate a personal relationship that has occurred over almost two decades,” he said.

“If Gavin Newsom weren’t governor, he and Jason Kinney would still be friends.”

Moving forward, Newsom will need to be careful to avoid favoring any of Kinney’s lobbying clients because people will look closely for any appearance of influence, Stern said.

“My big question will be ‘will this impact Jason Kinney’s business?’” he said. “Everybody’s going to be looking very carefully at what Newsom does in relation to Kinney’s clients. There’s a spotlight on both of them, and that’s not going to be helpful to Kinney.”

Twenty-two years ago, on the day after Gray Davis was elected governor of California, I hopped aboard a Southwest Airlines plane bound for Los Angeles.

I was heading south for Davis’ morning-after press conference and I was not alone. Several journalists and other Capitol figures were on the plane, including the man sitting across the aisle, a lobbyist for public employee unions.

The lobbyist was in an ebullient mood as we chatted. His union clients had helped Davis weather a very rough patch in his 1998 campaign for governor, when he faced two multi-millionaire rivals in the Democratic primary and needed all the money he could get.

The lobbyist was literally rubbing his hands gleefully, expecting that his tight relationship with Davis would automatically bring him a cornucopia of new clients and their fees. And he was not wrong about that, as later became evident.

I cite this instance because of the flap over Gov. Gavin Newsom’s attendance at a birthday party this month for lobbyist Jason Kinney, a veteran political consultant and a long-time Newsom friend who founded a lobbying firm, Axiom Advisors, shortly after Newsom was elected in 2018.

Kinney’s 50th birthday was celebrated with a lavish dinner party at French Laundry, a very expensive Napa restaurant, and Newsom and his wife, Jennifer, attended even though it was the sort of gathering that Newsom had often discouraged to battle the COVID-19 pandemic.

When the San Francisco Chronicle reported on the Newsoms’ attendance, its bad political optics forced the governor to apologize profusely, saying on Monday, “I shouldn’t have been there, I should have turned back around. And so when that happens, you gotta pay the price, but you also gotta own the mistake and you don’t ever make it again.”

The French Laundry incident, which reverberated loudly on social media as an example of political hypocrisy, also put the spotlight on Kinney — a former speechwriter for Gray Davis, incidentally — and his instantaneously lucrative lobbying practice.

As Politico pointed out in a quickly reported and written article, “Axiom reaped $10.9 million worth of lobbying work in 2019-20, the first legislative session during which Newsom was governor.”

The firm has nine lobbyists and more than 80 clients, most of whom are corporate entities or coalitions who in Capitol politics would be jousting with interests, such as unions and environmental groups, associated with Newsom’s Democratic Party.

“Some of Axiom’s clients highlight Kinney’s overlapping roles. Kidney dialysis firms DaVita and Fresenius paid Axiom $475,000 this session,” Politico reported. “During the same period, Kinney earned $90,000 from the California Democratic Party, which spent money to pass a labor-backed initiative regulating kidney dialysis. DaVita and Fresenius were the measure’s principal opponents.

“The single most remunerative client for Axiom in the last two years has been Marathon Petroleum, giving Kinney’s firm $525,000 worth of business. Marathon is a member of a powerful oil industry organization that battled proposals to ban hydraulic fracturing; Newsom called on the Legislature earlier this year to send him a fracking ban.”

Political decisions can have immense financial consequences and when conflicts arise, it’s prudent to have someone on retainer with a seat at the table in the back room where those decisions are made.

The lobbyist with whom I chatted 22 years ago still has a lobbying firm and dozens of clients who pay him more than $4 million a year. In real-world politics, one must pay to play with lobbying fees and campaign contributions. Rightly or wrongly, it is what it is.

Any parent will tell you that caring for kids is a lot of work. And if you have 19 kids? Well, then all bets are probably off. Just ask Michelle Duggar. On the TLC series 19 Kids and Counting and its follow-up Counting On, the mom of more than a dozen appears calm and collected. Over the family’s years on TV, viewers have seen how Michelle and her husband Jim Bob Duggar have implemented various systems to keep things running smoothly in their home, from assigning chores to the kids to the family’s controversial “buddy system,” where some of the older children take responsibility for caring for their younger siblings. 

But it wasn’t always that way. In the past, Michelle has opened up about feeling completely overwhelmed when she was a young mother.

Michelle and Jim Bob had their first child, a son named Josh, in 1988. A decade later, they had 11 kids in total, including two sets of twins. By the time Michelle gave birth for the last time in 2009, they had another eight children, for a grand total of 19. 

Parenting all those children was a challenge, Michelle revealed in a post she first shared on her family’s website back in 2005. Completing the basic tasks required to keep the household running — including laundry, cooking, and cleaning — was completely overwhelming, she confessed. 

At one point, Michelle found herself folding laundry at 1 a.m. with “tears streaming down my cheeks.” Between “diapers, dishes, laundry, meals, cleanup, school lessons, baths, hugs, kisses, [and] correction,” she simply couldn’t do it all, a realization that left her feeling “inadequate,” she wrote.  

A Duggar family friend stepped into help

Michelle shared that she turned to her faith and asked God to help her get through a difficult time. The next day — after staying up until 2 a.m. to finish all the laundry — she took her children to their piano lesson. She was so tired, she nearly fell asleep while her kids were practicing. When the music teacher asked if she was OK, Michelle admitted she was overwhelmed with mountains of laundry. The teacher promptly volunteered to help out, something she continued to do for the next decade. 

The Duggars did as many as 11 loads of laundry a day 

Laundry clearly wasn’t Michelle’s favorite household chore. And when you realize how much there was to do, it’s easy to see why. In her and Jim Bob’s 2011 book A Love That Multiples, they revealed that they did 8 to 11 loads of laundry every day. 

Washing all those clothes required four washers and four dryers, and when an ice storm once knocked out power in the family’s house for more than a week, the mountain of dirty laundry threatened to overwhelm them. And catching up on laundry after being away from home was also a challenge. 

“If we’re gone for a week and we come back from a trip, it gets piled up fast,” Joy-Anna Duggar said in an episode of 19 Kids and Counting.

Police searching for arsonist who set fire to laundry room - KPRC Click2Houston

HOUSTON – A man is wanted in connection to a fire inside a laundry room on October 11, according to Crime Stoppers and the Houston Arson Bureau. The incident occurred around 5 a.m. on the 6900 block of South Loop East at Telephone Road.

According to investigators, video surveillance shows a suspect placing “combustible material behind the laundry machine in the laundry room.” The material began to smoke and caught on fire.

The suspect is described as a Black male, slender build with dark hair, according to the release. A photo was provided by investigators.

Crime Stoppers may pay up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification, charging and/or arrest of the suspects in this case. Information may be reported by calling 713-222-TIPS (8477), submitted online at www.crime-stoppers.org or through the Crime Stoppers mobile app.

FRESNO, California (KSEE/KGPE) — Firefighters battled a laundry room fire Friday morning in northeast Fresno.

The fire started around 7:30 a.m. near Sierra Avenue and Fresno Street at a mobile home park.

Fire officials say crews responded to a small warming fire in the laundry room Thursday night around 9 p.m. 

They say the same room caught fire this morning and was fully involved when firefighters arrived. 

No one was hurt. Investigators are looking into how the fire started.
