1970: Oregon education official says state has no provision for supporting school district that fails to pass budget

Farmers and threshermen in the Pacific Northwest, where thresher explosions and fires have been most frequent, are manifesting a great deal of interest in the dust fan worked out by the United States Department of Agriculture. This fan takes care of smut and other dusts in such a way as to minimize the danger of sufficient dust in suspension to cause an explosion.

August 9, 1945

Clarence Hughbanks, washing machine operator at the Jones Laundry and Cleaners, lost three fingers on his right hand in an accident at the laundry early Monday morning. Mr. Hughbanks was alone in the plant at the time, getting the machinery into operation for the days work.

With the assignment of an additional 500 German prisoners of war to assist with hop picking, the total number of PW's helping with Oregon's harvest will be about 1,550 by the last of August, according to J.R. Beck, O.S.C., Extension service farm and labor supervisor.

August 6, 1970

Dr. Joyce Gubser, associate superintendent of public education, told Crook County taxpayers last week that the state has no provisions for supporting a school district that fails to pass a school budget.

When asked if there was an way that the state could help keep the schools open for a full year if the budget continued to fail, Dr. Gubser replied, "We'll pray for you."

Aware of the need to be able to answer a variety of questions about locating a state juvenile correction center in Crook County, a public meeting has been scheduled for next week.

By approving Measures 11 and 17, Oregon voters told the State Legislature that they wanted to get tough on crime.
