FENTON, MI — Owner Mark Hamel had trouble deciding the most popular sandwich at The Laundry, not because none came to mind, but because at least 20 sandwiches are on the same level of goodness.
“We have probably about 20 sandwiches that are our most popular,” Hamel said.
The Laundry, located at 125 W Shiawassee Ave. in Fenton, is described as an eclectic restaurant with a European influence.
Hamel, who opened the restaurant 23 years ago in a building that housed a laundromat, recommends any sandwich from the traditional BLT to a traditional Reuben.
“It’s top notch Reuben - I’d say one of the best in the state for lunchtime,” Hamel said. “We also have really awesome salads.”
The restaurateur has always worked in the restaurant business and got his start when he opened a small deli and everything grew from there, Hamel said.
Hamel owns Crust, a full-service retail and wholesale baking company located in downtown Fenton, which MLive awarded for “Best Bakery” in 2018. He also owns The Relief & Resource Co., a neighborhood speakeasy, and El Topo, a Latin American street food place.
While attending college in France, Hamel spent some time in the hospitality program and earned degrees in French and business. Some of the items on the menu reflect the European influence such as the real French onion soup or soupe à l’oignon gratinée.
The breakfast menu might be as impressive as the lunch menu. Customers can try their taste buds at a breakfast quesadilla, strawberries and cream pancakes, avocado toast, eggs benedict and more.
The successful business owner hasn’t been spared from the hardships that most businesses have experienced due to the challenges from the coronavirus and the orders from the Gov. Whitmer to keep seating at a limited capacity.
“It’s been very difficult to say the least,” Hamel said.
At some point during the pandemic, Hamel closed three of his four restaurants and only 12 of the 300 employees were able to work. Now, the workforce is at 60 percent, he said.
“It hasn’t been a cakewalk,” Hamel said.
The business offers dine-in, outdoor seating and take-out.
