BAYONNE — Fourteen residents are displaced after a fire extended to three adjacent buildings Saturday night, city Fire Chief Keith Weaver said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Weaver said the blaze appears to have originated in the rear of Fortune Cleaners, a laundry service, located at 120 Kennedy Blvd. None of the residents sustained injuries, Weaver added.
Around 9:20 p.m., firefighters responded to 4th Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard for a report on a fire.
They were met with heavy fire behind 118 Kennedy Blvd, which soon stretched to neighboring buildings 120, 122 and 126 JFK Blvd, Weaver said. The buildings are 2 stories high.
Firefighters used multiple handlines to contain the blaze and put it under control by 10:47 p.m, Weaver said.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries. They were transported to Bayonne Medical Center and released.
The 14 people who were displaced are under the care of the Bayonne Office of Emergency Management and Red Cross, Weaver said.
The Jersey City Fire Department assisted at the scene and the North Hudson Regional Fire Department back filled Bayonne firehouses during the incident, Weaver added.
