Seaside High School has opened an Independent Student Center for kids who may not have access to laundry and healthy snacks during the pandemic.Students are not physically in the classroom this year but they are expected to report to class via zoom and feeling good about yourself is key to student engagement. So this year Monterey Peninsula Unified School District took on the challenge of providing essential hygiene products at all of its high schools."We understood that the global pandemic was really hard for everyone, specifically for our students here on campus, so we created a safe environment for them to come to campus get some toiletries that they can take home," said Seaside High athletic director Alex Jennings. The center also has a washer and dryer for students to do laundry, tables and chairs where they can work on homework, pantry staples and snacks.Everything in the resource centers at all three MPUSD high schools was donated and the centers will stay open even after the pandemic. The idea originated at Monterey High School where 10 percent of the students are homeless. The centers are geared towards high school students but open to kids of all ages in the district. The Seaside High Independent Student Center is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The center opened last week and the school is trying to get the word out about the resource"I think this will be a great opportunity for a lot of the students here from our school, to hear this and see this and share this with their friends who they feel like may need this resource," said Jennings. Those interested in donating to the center can contact the school at 831-392-3530, ext. 2078.
