(Jan. 17, 2021) The Nantucket Fire Department put out a fire that was contained to the laundry room of a Hummock Pond Road house just after 3 a.m. Sunday.
Nantucket Fire Chief Stephen Murphy said the fire was reported by the occupants of the home at 79 Hummock Pond Road by 911 call at 3 a.m., who then exited safely.
"The fire department engine crew arrived to find a fire inside a laundry room at the rear of the home. The fire was contained to the laundry room with smoke damage throughout the property," Murphy wrote in a press release.
Twelve firefighters, an engine and the ladder truck responded to the call. There were no injuries to fire personnel, who cleared the scene by 4:30 a.m., Murphy said.
"One resident did sustain injuries while trying to put out the fire but denied care on scene and later self-transported to the hospital. The injuries were reported as minor," he said.
The fire caused an estimated $40,000 in damage, Murphy said. The cause is under investigation but does not appear to be suspicious. There were no propane utilities at the home.
