The Memo: When can we see jobs recover? And a laundry list of openings, closings - Duluth News Tribune

So everything will go back to normal soon, right? Nope.

It will take until 2022 or 2023 for employment to recover to pre-pandemic levels, the Department of Employment and Economic Development said in its third-quarter jobs forecast released in December.

Dave Senf, labor market analyst at DEED, wrote: "Complete recovery of all jobs lost during the pandemic — since first quarter 2020 — is not expected until sometime at the end of 2022 or beginning of 2023 as the pandemic’s grip on everyday life fades away."

Canal Bark closed for month

Canal Bark, the pet boarding and training business in Duluth's Airpark, will close from Jan. 4-31, the company announced on Facebook in December.

Like many businesses, it's been hit hard by the pandemic and isn't getting government aid fast enough.

"We have already had to make some tough decisions on staffing this year to try to stay solvent with drastically reduced revenue, but the outlook for January is not good," Canal Bark wrote. "Unfortunately, the options for government funding support will not be available in time for January and we have exhausted all options. However, we do believe we'll be able to open back up on February 1st if all goes well."

Environmental group opens Duluth office

The Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy, a St. Paul-based nonprofit, has opened a Duluth office in Canal Park's DeWitt-Seitz Building.

MCEA is probably an official intervenor on just about every project I cover on my energy and mining beat. The group is opposed to many of the area's large industrial projects, including the PolyMet and Twin Metals copper-nickel mines and Minnesota Power's proposed Nemadji Trail Energy Center natural gas power plant in Superior.

It makes sense it would open an office up here, where many of the state's most-pressing environmental issues are playing out.

"The office reflects our commitment in the area, and we look forward to the time soon when we can formally open our doors to the public," MCEA spokesperson JT Haines said.

Spirit Valley Laundromat reopens under new name

The Duluth laundromat formerly known as Spirit Valley Laundromat has reopened as Spin City Laundry.

Under new owner Terry Stroik, the business, 232 N. Central Ave., was closed temporarily for an interior refresh but reopened in December.

On Facebook, the laundromat said the names of the machines, like "WyLee" will remain.
