Editor’s note: For a story on Alliance Laundry’s take on shifting of departments, click here.
Ripon tax payers beware, big changes are occurring at Alliance Laundry. Whole departments are being shipped overseas or to Manitowoc. On Feb. 9, Genuine Parts was notified that the department was being moved to Manitowoc. Forty-five people are being displaced and because of age or physical limitations a good portion may very well no longer be employed.
Why? Tax incentives when they bought the Manitowoc building (Ripon/FdL Counties come off the books at the end of the 2021). The Union contract is up for renewal next March. A desire by the Corporate offices in Coral Gables, Fla. to make Ripon a purely assembly plant (which will reduce jobs), and to rid the Company of the long term employees who are still set to earn a pension when they retire.
Sadly, three years ago when the corporate offices were moved to Florida there became a disconnect between the Ripon community, Ripon employees and the decision makers. Decisions today are made based on what the bottom line looks like. The opinion of the employees as to whether it is a decision makes common sense, top to bottom in Ripon (Union, Office, or Engineers), are rarely consulted or even invited.
So yes it is my belief and that of others in the plant that sustainability in Ripon is short lived.
