Leadership by laundry? Little things make the difference for Coosa girls basketball - Gadsden Times

Showing leadership by doing laundry?

That's just one of the ways for Coosa Christian senior captain Chloe Davidson.

"If we need anything, she's the first to step up and do it off the court," Coosa girls basketball coach Jayme Hollingsworth said. "From doing our laundry to washing our jerseys and taking care of us in the locker room. Her and Bella (Millirons) both."

Little things like that make a big difference.

"This team has been the most bought in," Hollingsworth said. "Not that the other ones weren't, but this is a special group from our senior leadership. But this is the first time I've ever had a sophomore captain."

Millirons, a sophomore and the Area 10 tournament MVP, has led Etowah County girls basketball in scoring for two consecutive years and averaged 23.7 points this season. Davidson is right behind her with 18.7 points.

While those numbers are important to the success of the Conquerors (22-3) this season –  they finished the regular season ranked No. 5 and won the Area 10 tournament with a 63-44 win over Ragland on Friday – it's the things off the court that make all the difference.

There's no job too small for Coosa's three captains – Davidson, Millirons and senior Erin Snow.  That's just the way each want it.

"We have to show that everyone can help, not just the young kids," Millirons said. "Chloe will do laundry sometimes. I'll carry the rack out. We'll put the rims up. We show that it's not a bad job. So the whole team does that now."

It's about setting an example.

"It shows that just because you're a captain doesn't mean you get to do whatever you want and you tell people what to do," Snow said.

That kind of culture has had a positive impact on the team, Davidson, who scored a game-high 21 points in the win over Ragland, said.

"It's not just having our upperclassmen make the younger classmen do everything; we are a family," she added. "We all work like that and we know we have each other's back."

After all, it takes everyone in a family to pitch in and do their part.

"In a family you all have responsibilities," Millirons said. "Sometimes it's your turn to take out the trash. Sometimes it's your turn to do the laundry. We just want to make sure everyone is part of that and knew that it is OK."

Coosa is back in the 1A sub-regionals for the fifth consecutive season under Hollingsworth and is looking for its first Northeast Regional berth since 2017. The Conquerors host Appalachian in the sub-regional round Monday.
