Area residents who are still having issues with running water in their homes can utilize a free laundry service on Saturday in Independence Heights.
The Tide Loads of Hope program will have a clothes-washing truck parked at True Light Missionary Baptist Church, located at 7102 N. Main St., from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. Laundry service also was available there on Thursday and Friday.
Tanya Debose, the executive director of the Independence Heights Redevelopment Council who has been helping neighborhood residents recover from Winter Storm Uri last month, said Friday that at least 100 homes in the community continue to have challenges with running water. Many of those residents have not yet been able to repair pipes that froze and burst, she said, because of the costs associated with repairs or because plumbing work and supplies are in such high demand.
Debose said the Loads of Hope service is available to all Houston-area storm survivors who are still having water issues. Residents who bring clothes on Saturday will have them washed on the same day, so Debose said laundry needs to be dropped off by 3 p.m. to allow enough time for it to be cleaned.
"They're real quick," she said.
Loads of Hope will clean up to two bags of laundry per family, including up to two towels. No bedding will be washed.
