Laundry, showers and mail services are now available for the homeless community at the O'Reilly Center for Hope at 1518 E. Dale St.

There is no charge for these services.

The O'Reilly Center for Hope — housed in the former Pepperdine school building — opened as a new one-stop shop last year. The 103-year-old building brings multiple agencies under one roof to provide resources and education for those in poverty, homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, struggling with mental health issues or neighbors who need to borrow a shovel or saw from the tool lending library.

No reservations are required to use the showers and laundry, but those services are on a first-come, first-serve basis with a priority given to the homeless community. Guests are asked to not engage in the same service more than once a day unless it's an emergency, explained Michelle Garand with Community Partnership of the Ozarks.

Having access to showers and laundry are more important that ever, Garand said, due to the pandemic and increased health and hygiene needs.

The shower cubicles and laundry facilities will be sanitized after each use.

Guests do not need to have an ID to use the shower or laundry.

If a person wants to access the mail services and does not have an ID, they can work directly with One Door to get a "service point ID" and be able to use the mail service the same day, Garand said.

The mail is kept in a safe, which is especially important for those who receive government checks, stimulus checks or EBT cards in the mail.

"We'll lock those up and make sure that those are in safe keeping if they can't get to us right away," Garand said.

Community Partnership of the Ozarks purchased the 21,500-square-foot building in northeast Springfield a few years ago for $100,000. With renovations, the total project cost about $3 million.

Service agencies like Habitat for Humanity, OACAC, Burrell Behavioral Health, Isabel's House, Springfield Public Schools, Consumer Credit Counseling, Catholic Charities and Springfield Community Land Trust have offices and representatives at the O'Reilly Center for Hope.

Garand said the hope is that when people come in to use the showers, laundry or mail that they will have an opportunity to learn about and engage with the other agencies on site.

There is a bus stop across the street from the Center for Hope. A bus line travels directly from the Veteran's Coming Home Center (the daytime drop in center for homeless people) to the O'Reilly Center for Hope every day.
