Police said a Redding man with felony warrants out for his arrest started a high-speed chase, ran into a hotel and slid down the laundry chute in an attempt to escape law enforcement on Sunday.

The man was identified as 32-year-old Ruben Reyes Ybarra. He was arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of several offenses, including felony evasion of a peace officer, according to the Redding Police Department.

The incident began at 3:39 p.m. when officer Travis Williams saw a red SUV driven by Ybarra in the area of East Cypress Avenue and Bechelli Lane, according to an RPD news release. Williams recognized Ybarra, who had eight warrants for his arrest.

When the officer got behind the SUV, Ybarra went southbound on Interstate 5. Police pursued but backed off when speeds reached 100 mph, according to the news release.

A California Highway Patrol plane launched and caught up to Ybarra, following him to Red Bluff, where he exited I-5 toward Main Street and pulled into a Home Depot parking lot. He then ran into a nearby Holiday Inn, according to police.

Police and a K-9 named Otto searched inside the hotel until the dog led officers to a locked closet on the second story. Ybarra, who was inside the closet, "slid down a laundry chute to the first floor," where he ran into a California Department of Fish and Wildlife warden, according to the news release.

The warden took Ybarra into custody without further incident, according to police. He remains in the Shasta County Jail with no bail amount listed.

Police said it's the 11th time Ybarra has been arrested in the past two years. Computerized Shasta County Superior Court records show Ybarra has been twice convicted of charges related to stealing vehicles since 2015.

Redding police also credited the Red Bluff Police Department and Tehama County Sheriff's Department for assisting in the arrest.
