The Ripon Area Fire District responded to a fire at the Alliance Laundry Systems facility near Vermont Street and Lyon Street Wednesday night that caused no injuries.
A general alarm call came in around 9 p.m. that reported smoke was in the building, with visible flames.
According to Alliance Laundry Public Relations Manager Randy Radtke, there was a fire in a compressor in the building adjacent to the production facility.
Radtke said the fire was contained to the compressor unit, but smoke traveled into the main building due to shared ducting and ventilation.
Deputy Fire Chief Mark Sabel said the fire district was on the scene within minutes with its rapid response vehicle.
Upon arrival, he noted firefighters found the building’s sprinkler system was going off, so they put more water on the compressor unit as they waited for more trucks to arrive to use a larger waterline.
In addition to using water, firefighters used “dry chemicals” because it was an oil and paper fire inside the compressor, Sabel said.
By 9:20 p.m., he added that the fire district had extinguished the blaze.
Mutual aid was requested from several departments. Shortly after many of the departments arrived, Sabel said the fire district called the other departments off because the fire was out.
The Brandon-Fairwater Fire Department remained at the Ripon fire station to cover calls while the Ripon Area Fire District worked on clean-up at the Alliance site.
Aside from Brandon-Fairwater, fire departments from Princeton, Markesan and the city of Fond du Lac responded to the scene.
Sabel explained that anytime the fire district has a reported structure fire or smoke and flames are visible, an “auto aid” call is sent out to other departments.
He noted the Ripon Area Fire District has not determined the cause of the fire yet, but it remains under investigation.
The deputy fire chief added that the damage was limited to the one compressor as well as possible smoke and water damage to the compressor room.
“With the sprinkler going off, there could be damage to some electrical equipment,” Sabel said.
Radtke added that there was no risk of fire in the main plant and Alliance Laundry is working to establish the cause of the fire.
"We are up and running as usual this morning," he said the day after the fire.
In a Facebook post, Alliance Laundry Systems thanked the Ripon Area Fire District for its quick response.
“A heartfelt thank you to the Ripon Fire Department for their assistance,” the company said. “We are grateful that there were no injuries. This was a contained fire in an air compressor unit and it was quickly brought under control.”
