St. Paul author and businessman and laundry-loving guy Patric Richardson has a new series streaming on Discovery+. “The Laundry Guy” helps people deal with stains and other textile troubles. The series runs through April 21, and each weekend until then, Richardson is offering a tip from “The Laundry Guy.” (Richardson’s new book, “Laundry Love” was published March 31.)
HANGING OUT — OR IN
OK, the weather this week is amazing. When the weather is so nice, or anytime really, a great idea is to hang your clothes to dry rather than put them in the dryer. Old-fashioned clotheslines will give your sheets that “fresh linen” smell, but you can achieve the same results with a drying rack and some plastic hangers in your laundry room.Why, you ask?
The answer is simple — it is great for your clothes. Abrasion is the enemy to your wardrobe, and all that time tumbling breaks down the fibers and ends up as lint in the trap as your clothes slowly erode. In fact, hanging to dry will extend the life of your clothes more than double.
I know many people like the wrinkle-removing power of the dryer so here’s a compromise: five minutes in the dryer, then hang. A short tumble time will remove the wrinkles but still not wear out the fibers so you will enjoy that shirt/dress/pant/skirt for many seasons to come.
Try hanging things to dry — you’ll love the results and once you start and see how easy it is, you’ll never go back!
