TUSCALOOSA, AL — The Tuscaloosa County Commission approved a bid for three new commercial grade washing machines and four laundry dryers for the county jail as usage has increased during the coronavirus pandemic.
Southeastern came in with the lower bid, which was ultimately approved at a cost of $53,985.40, while SaveMore's bid was $60,588.
"They're actually going to take care of all the installation and we'll prep it," Sabbagh said. "There's a little bit of vent work we have to do in-house."
He then pointed out how much laundry work had increased during the pandemic and placing a strain on existing equipment, to which he said in normal times would be repaired as opposed to replaced.
"It's amazing the things you don't think of, when you start cleaning and doing more and more," commented Probate Judge Rob Robertson.
Another point of discussion came as Commissioners mentioned the possibility of getting machines with built-in fire protection systems, as dryer fires have been reported in the past in the jail.
"It's just something to think about," Sabbagh said. "It's been a while since we have replaced one, typically we will just replace a part, but they are commercial grade so they are very durable machines. This one comes with a three-year warranty, which is outstanding."
The maintenance superintendent then said he would check on the pricing, but was allowed to proceed with the bid and will report back on pricing to the Commission at a later date.
