30 Second Interview: Cleaning and laundry brand Smol on its new funding - iNews

This week’s 30 Second Interview is with Smol, a direct-to-consumer cleaning which has just raised $34m (£24m) in its latest funding round. Co-founder Nick Green answers quickfire questions.

Why and when did the business start?

Launched in March 2018, smol was born of the belief that it’s the small (smol!) things that can make a big difference. We set out to revolutionise the laundry sector which had seen little innovation in decades. We wanted to offer eco-friendly, high performance products delivered straight to the customer – cutting out the middleman and saving money where customers needed it most.

How has the pandemic affected your business?

At the start of the first lockdown we saw a surge of new customers as people responded to the uncertainty at the time. We worked hard to ensure adequate stock levels to give existing customers what they needed whilst servicing our new customers. We have been lucky that smol has continued to grow and we have been able to launch our new plastic-free packaging during the pandemic alongside our animal fat-free fabric conditioner and our water-saving surface sprays. It’s been a challenging year but it’s had many positives.

Our proposition is more relevant now than when we began. People want affordable eco-friendly products that still deliver great performance with the convenience of online ordering and home delivery.

What are your plans for this year?

We have plans to expand our product range with so many exciting projects in the pipeline. We also have plans to grow our team, and are looking to expand in other markets such as Germany and the Netherlands.

Are we in a subscription service boom… and will there be a bust?

The pandemic has accelerated existing trends towards online versus offline shopping by up to 5 years. Subscription services offer the convenience of buying online combined with the benefits of home delivery and these trends will continue post pandemic. Not all products lend themselves towards the subscription model, but for those that do… growth will continue to be strong.
