Household cleaners, laundry detergents, health and beauty products, and other personal care products in the Susquehanna River Basin will come under scrutiny in a citizen-science study directed by the Penn State Center for Contaminants of Emerging Concern.
The center is looking for 60 citizen scientists to collect water samples and complete Endocrine Disrupting Compound footprint calculators for the study, focused on identifying personal care products in water samples collected throughout the basin.
Many compounds that make up our personal care products are classified as endocrine disrupters, which can mimic or alter hormones and stunt or inhibit the development of many aquatic organisms like fish and amphibians.
A citizen scientist is a volunteer in research. Varying by project and following the specifications of each project, a citizen scientist can help design experiments, collect data, analyze results and solve problems. The work can involve some initial training, use of specified equipment and tech, standardized reporting and the like. A citizen scientist extends the reach of a research effort.
The citizen scientists in the study will be asked to use an online EDC footprint calculator to tally the amount of household products they own into three categories: health and beauty, laundry, and cleaning. The online survey can take 30-60 minutes to complete.
After completing the survey, each participant will be asked to select one of 60 locations across the basin and use a supplied sampling kit to collect a surface water sample.
The researchers expect to send out the sampling kits the first week of June. Participants will be asked to collect and ship their water samples to Penn State within a week or two.
After the researchers process the samples, citizen scientists will receive a detailed report including their EDC footprint calculator results, water sample results, and how these results compare to the other sampling locations.
