CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The man killed at the Salvation Army emergency shelter on Sunday was strangled, then his body was hidden under blankets in a wheelchair, according to court records.

Corey Allen, 31, of Sevierville, Tennessee, was charged with criminal homicide and booked into Montgomery County Jail Sunday afternoon. According to police, Allen has no known ties to the area.

Corey Allen was arrested on April 2, 2021 and charged with criminal homicide in connection to a killing that occurred at the Salvation Army earlier that morning. (Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office)

According court records obtained by Clarksville Now, CPD officers responded to an ambulance call for a possibly unresponsive individual at 7:39 a.m. Sunday morning.

When they arrived, they found David Nelson Moore, 79, unresponsive in the laundry room sitting in a wheelchair. He had a trash bag pulled over his body, and sheets and pillows were stacked on top of him, the court records said.

Montgomery County EMS pronounced Moore dead at the scene.

According to the records, a shelter monitor said Moore was Allen’s roommate in the shelter, and around 4:30 a.m. that morning, Allen rolled a wheelchair into the dining room of the Salvation Army shelter that had sheets and pillows stacked on it.

The monitor said they believed the wheelchair to be stacked with dirty laundry, so they escorted Allen into the laundry room, unlocked the door and instructed him to place the wheelchair in the room, the records said.

The laundry room remains locked at all times, and the monitor was the only person at the shelter who had a key.

After Allen was read his rights, he admitted in a police interview that he strangled Moore, then placed him in the wheelchair and covered him with the trash bag, sheets and pillows, according to the records.

It is unknown if Moore was wheelchair bound or not.
