Woman probably lost $26 million lotto prize in laundry; ticket purchased in Norwalk - Press-Enterprise

An unnamed woman probably lost a $26 million winning lottery ticket purchased at a Norwalk ARCO AM/PM convenience store when she put it into the pocket of her pants that went into the laundry, a worker at the store said on Thursday, May 13.

The woman came into the service station on Wednesday to explain, employee Esperanza Hernandez said.

But it’s possible she’s one of at least six people who turned in a non-ticket claim to the lottery office, Cathy Johnston, California Lottery Center spokeswoman, said in a telephone interview. However, the woman didn’t bring the ticket in by the 5 p.m. deadline, Johnston added.

However, in order to get the prize you need “compelling substantial proof you were in possession of the ticket,” she said.

And you can’t use the store’s security-video footage, she added, because the cameras aren’t owned by the lottery center and you can’t be sure of the time factor.

The $26 million ticket was purchased six months ago at the store at 10602 E. Imperial Highway in Norwalk. The winning numbers are 23, 36, 12, 31, 13, and the mega number of 10.

Lottery officials vow to look into the woman’s claim that the ticket was lost.

“Every claim of this size if it is not turned in will be investigated,” Johnston said.

Johnston said it is rare for a winning ticket not to be submitted for the prize.

If a person believes that they have the winning ticket, they will need to complete a California Lottery claim form, according to a Lottery Center release.

Claim forms are available on the lotto center, its website, https://www.calottery.com/claim-a-prize, at all lottery district offices, and at any of the more than 23,000 lottery retailers throughout the state.

If the prize isn’t claimed, $19.7 million, the cash option, will go back to education, Johnston said.
