Headline: Estes Park Laundry Will Have Formal Opening Of New Building On Saturday

Body: The Estes Park laundry and Dry Cleaners will have the formal opening and open house of its new building on Moraine Drive this Saturday.

After several weeks of construction activity, the building is ready and the Saturday opening will signal the start of a year-around operation of the laundry, which is one of the town’s oldest establishments, having been started here in 1907.

One half of the old building on West Riverside will be abandoned this summer, and the other half used for commercial work. Even so, according to the owners, Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Bartlett, the laundry will have an overall capacity increase of some 30%.

The new building will be devoted to year-aro8und operation of dry cleaning and laundry. The building contents about 3800 square feet of floor space on its two floors, 32 feet by 80 feet.

On the upper floor of the new building will be the dry cleaning plant, laundryette equipment, the Call office and main office for the Bartletts.  On the lower floor will be the complete finish laundry departments, where the most modern new equipment has been installed for year around operation.

Local builders worked with Joe Haller, general contractor, to erect the building, and their part in the project is listed in a double-page advertisement this week.

Total cost of the improvement and modernization program is about $50,000.

In a setting of interesting early Americana, Mr. Bartless is offering to the public a selection of choice edibles which are far from old-fashioned. There are 89 varieties of imported and domestic cheeses, 43 different spices, hickory smoked chicken, ham and oysters, and Mr. Bartlett says in his Trail ad, that his hors d’oeuvre line is complete.

Also featured in the store are regular grocery merchandise and some delicatessen additions to the menu.

Headline: Liquor License Issued To New Gaslight Pub

Body: Estes Park will soon have a new restaurant specializing in seafoods and serving cocktails.  The town board issued a license Monday night allowing the Galco, Inc., to serve beer, wine and spirituous liquor in the new business.

Glenn H. West and Larry W. Beale had made application for the permit on March 15, 1968.  A public hearing was set and held Monday night concerning the application.  No one was present to protest the application.

West said the new business is about three-fourths completed now. It will have a fountain, aquarium, wood paneling, and Early-American brick decor. There will be no bar in the restaurant, West said, and drinks will be served only to tables.

Ray Good, attorney from Loveland, presented the case for the Galco, Inc., who will be doing business as the Old Gaslight Pub, Limited, at 260A Moraine Avenue. Good recited his case clearly, saying that West and Beale had met all qualifications and regulations for the permit and then he gave the reasons why the license should be issued in the area. Petitions signed by property owners and businessmen in the area were also presented. All were in favor of the granting of the license.

Only one question was asked. A board member asked if the business would be a year around business or a seasonal one. Mr. West said it would be a year around business.  All the trustees voted in favor of granting the license.

(Note: The 1907 laundry referred to in the first article was the Estes Park Steam Laundry on East Elkhorn Avenue connected with Ralph Macdonald, who had moved it to the “pinch” between West Riverside and Moraine by the early 1920s. The new 1955 building housing the laundry and dry cleaners was expanded northward in 1956, renamed the “Frontier Shops”, and eventually grew to occupy the same footprint as the current Gaslight Square complex. In a way, this building could be considered Estes Park’s first strip mall.  Norb and June Bartlett were among the most successful entrepreneurs in Estes Park, striking it big with the Intrigue Shop and dipped aspen leaves in the 1970s and, capitalizing on the collectible pewter craze, the Ricker-Bartlett studio in the 1980s.  Other Estes Park icons starting out in the Pioneer Shops/Gaslight Square complex include Tony’s Pizza (the precursor to Bob and Tony’s), Brownfields, and the artist Greg Steiner.)
