Want to eat indoors at the French Laundry during the pandemic? It'll cost you $850 - SF Gate

For millions of newly unemployed people, the pandemic is a time of financial hardship. Others, apparently, can still afford to drop $850 to eat caviar at the French Laundry. On Wednesday, Thomas Keller’s luxurious Yountville restaurant announced the return of indoor dining: Parties of two to eight people can reserve a "fully immersive and privatized experience" inside one of the restaurant's three dining rooms for a whopping $850 per person. Just three tables are available at one time.

What's on the menu? Well, about what you'd expect for a meal that costs nearly a grand: a bottle of 2006 Dom Perignon, truffles, Regiis Ova caviar, foie gras, wagyu beef and “extended canapés and dessert service.”

Thousands of French Laundry fans liked the announcement on Instagram, with comments ranging from "Sounds amazing!!!" to "#tonedeaf."

On Monday, Napa County began allowing restaurants to reopen for indoor dining at 25% capacity. After thirteen weeks of a temporary closure, the French Laundry initially began offering outdoor dining in early July, with a tasting menu at its usual, non-pandemic price of $350.

While the $850 experience struck some, like Eater, as "fit for a Bond villain," it's not as if the French Laundry hasn't been struggling along with pretty much every other restaurant in the world right now. Back in March, Keller sued the restaurant's insurer over refusal to cover pandemic losses.

"This is a time of crisis right now. And we need help," Keller told CBS at the time.
