Mme. Mazet French Laundry opened for business at 407 D St. in San Rafael in 1907 and operated for nearly 50 years from three addresses along D Street.
Florent and Angele Mazet immigrated to the United States from France and lived in San Francisco until moving to San Rafael. Florent Mazet was a member and one-time president of the San Rafael Lafayette Club, a social organization whose aims were to “unite all American citizens of French origin,” assist French people who desire to become citizens, and “encourage participation in the civic activities of community and country.”
In the first years, the couple and their six children lived above the laundry fronting the street, while the laundry machinery and horse’s stables were in the back. Eventually the couple handed ownership over to their son, Eugene, and daughter, Gay.
Florent Mazet died in 1940 at the age of 73 and was buried in Mt. Olivet cemetery.
The laundry went out of business in the fall of 1955. Harvey Morse purchased the building at 807 D St. and moved his Marin Furniture & Appliance Exchange into the building after extensive renovations.
Angele Mazet lived in San Rafael until she dies in 1964 at the age of 87.
