Faculty at Silver Creek High School are working to create a laundry facility on campus to make students feel more confident in the classroom.A survey was sent out to the student body last week asking them to point out the issues they are facing outside of school. Three hundred people replied, 42 of them stated it was hard for them to find access to washing and drying machines. Searching for a way to solve this issue, librarian Dee Kramer and English teacher Amanda Ahlbrand came up with an idea to create a fundraiser. The money would be used to buy two commercial washing machines and two commercial dryers.“Think back to when you were adolescent,” said Kramer. “The most important thing you think you care about is what people are thinking about you. Can you imagine sitting in a classroom thinking I stink, I mean people around are talking about how badly I smell.”Kramer and Ahlbrand took their idea to other members of faculty, and they said the response was an overwhelming yes. Many thought this could be the answer to helping students stay more focused in the classroom.“Students were missing school because of not being able to wear clean clothes,” said Ahlbrand. “They would rather stay at home, then come and face their peers with dirty clothes.”The facility will be offered to students at no cost, and it will be accessible through a side door to the outside, allowing them to remain anonymous when using it.“If we can take care, and help families out with those basic needs, we know they will show up for the academics,” said Ahlbrand. They created a PayPal and within two weeks were able to raise about $2,200 for the equipment. Although they have received offers from the community to get regular washers and dryers, Kramer says they are looking at commercial machines, which are known to last longer. The cost for one set would be $4,000. “We have some people in the community who are offering to help out, but nothing is firm yet,” said Kramer. “We just started it’ll happen.”If you are wanting to help out visit this link.
