Venomous Snake Found on Man's Sink After It Climbed Into Laundry Room - Newsweek

A highly venomous snake has been found in the sink of a man's laundry room in eastern Australia.

An image posted to Facebook by local business Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7 (SCSC) shows an eastern brown snake slithering atop the sink in the rural town of Wamuran.

In the Facebook post, a spokesperson for SCSC suggested that many people might be surprised that the serpent managed to get on top of the sink, given the widely held belief in Australia that venomous snakes, like the eastern brown, can't climb.

"Venomous snakes can certainly climb—some venomous snakes in fact are very good climbers. Eastern brown snakes tend to spend most of their time on the ground, however, when they want to are quite capable climbers as demonstrated by this brown snake we caught this [afternoon.]"

A snake catcher from SCSC eventually managed to catch the snake and remove it from the man's home.

In a factsheet, the company said that all snakes can climb to varying degrees, although some are more suited to this kind of behavior than others due to the different types of prey and shelter that they seek.

Tree-dwelling, or "arboreal," snakes such as pythons and tree snakes tend to be excellent climbers.

But while people often assume that ground-dwelling snakes, like the eastern brown, do not climb, they are sometimes spotted on the tops of fences, in the low branches of trees, on the roofs of houses and even inside nesting boxes in bird aviaries, SCSC said.

The eastern brown is one of nine species of brown snake that live in Australia, all of which belong to the genus Pseudonaja. These serpents are considered to be among the most dangerous snakes in the world.

The bite of an eastern brown snake, for example, injects venom that is powerful enough to kill an adult human.

Two separate studies have found the eastern brown has the second most toxic venom of any snake in the world. This venom can lead to paralysis and also contains toxins that prevent blood from clotting.

While deaths caused by an eastern brown snake bite are very rare in Australia, this animal kills more people than any other serpent in the country.

The eastern brown snake can measure up to around eight feet in length, making it the largest member of its genus.

While eastern brown snakes have a reputation for being aggressive, experts say that many people might mistake defensive behaviors for aggression when encountering these animals.
