Fire breaks out in Aloft Tampa Midtown Hotel laundry room - Tampa Bay Times

TAMPA — Aloft Tampa Midtown Hotel was evacuated Saturday night after a drier caught fire, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.

Firefighters arrived about 8:30 p.m. at the six-story hotel at 3650 Midtown Drive to investigate a report of a fire. The hotel is located in the Midtown Tampa development near N Dale Mabry Highway and W Cypress Street.

They found the source of the fire just one floor above them: A drier in the second-floor laundry room had caught fire.

The hotel was evacuated and no one was injured, according to fire officials. The automatic sprinkler system was activated and helped contain the fire. It took firefighters about 20 minutes to extinguish the fire.

The fire was deemed accidental by a fire marshal. However, Tampa Fire Rescue did not say when guests were allowed back inside.

Brazilian-born couple Wagner Araujo, 43, and his wife Elaine Araujo, 41, had to isolate in a small hotel room for 11 days thanks to the UK Government's order that anyone travelling from a "red list" of countries would have to quarantine on arrival to combat the spread of new variants of COVID-19.

Their trip had not gone to plan. Their return from Sao Paulo, to which they had travelled on January 11, had already been delayed by 11 days and they were apprehensive about another 10 days of being away from their four children, aged between six and 17, who were at their home in North London.

The couple travelled to visit Wagner's elderly parents. They knew going during the pandemic was a risk, but Wagner told Insider he felt he had to.

"My parents are old and have a lot of health issues," he said, "and I didn't know if I would be able to spend time with them again."

They were awaiting a new return flight when the UK government announced on February 5 that any travellers coming from any one of 33 countries - including Brazil - would have to immediately isolate on arrival.

The policy would take effect on February 15, the day the Araujos were due to land.

After the announcement, the admin took its toll on the pair. "I started to be upset about it," Wagner said, but eventually they had everything prepared.

They landed at 11a.m. at Heathrow and went through a special lane at immigration to collect their luggage and be driven to the Radisson Blu hotel, all under security escort.

They paid £2,400 ($3,343) for a double room. The £1,750 ($2,436) mandatory cost widely reported in the press is for a single room.

Their first night was "really bad", said Wagner, as the room received little natural light through the window that faced onto the bricks of another building.

The hotel manager moved them to a room overlooking a main road and one of Heathrow's runways. "Every morning we open the curtains and let the light in, and it makes us happier," Wagner said.

The days were virtually identical. Their days within the same four walls came to be structured by the arrival of meals at the door; food which Wagner said was "delicious" but sometimes came in small portions. The hotel always accommodated them when they asked for seconds.

After eating the breakfast dropped in cardboard takeout boxes by their door, Elaine would go back to sleep briefly while Wagner would exercise.

For the rest of the day, Wagner would play "Fifa" on his PlayStation 4 and watch Netflix on the TV.

They would read and play cards. Every night, the couple watched their favorite show, "Suits". Each episode is around 45 minutes but the couple managed to get through 70 episodes in quarantine.

There were also the practical aspects of living to think about. The couple both prefer showers to baths and they ended up using the tub to wash small items and delicates in, as they were each only permitted to leave seven items of clothing outside their door to be washed by hotel staff.

Likewise clean sheets were left outside the door, and Wagner asked for a hoover at one point so he could vacuum the room.

All of this is recorded in a quarantine diary Wagner kept of their stay to, he said, "remember the experience for life and to learn something from it".

But while Wagner and Elaine have stayed upbeat by keeping themselves busy, it has at times felt like being "in a prison", he said.

They only left the room to go outside once. They were permitted to walk in the hotel car park but the experience of having to fill out forms and then be watched by staff dissuaded them from venturing out a second time.

"Writing about how hard it's been to be locked in a room for 24 hours all day every day has helped," Wagner said. "It's like you're not free at all and we didn't like it.

"It's a bit like a prison, if you do want to do something different you need permission. So it's been quite stressful."

Regularly FaceTiming with their children has kept the pair going. "We are so excited to leave and go home," Elaine said on Wednesday as their departure on Friday loomed.

Wagner added: "We are anxious to return home back to our kids because we are missing them a lot ... Though we're passing through it really well, it has been really hard.

"We can't wait for our freedom, to see our kids and return to the comfort of our home."

They took their second COVID test at the hotel on Tuesday, having had a negative test the previous Wednesday.

Despite everything, they don't regret leaving the country and being delayed and caught up in quarantine.

"It was worth every minute because I got to see my parents," Wagner said.

Appleton firefighters put out laundry fire in hotel basement - WGBA-TV

APPLETON, Wis. (NBC 26) — Firefighters said they responded to a laundry fire in the basement of a hotel Saturday at 4 a.m.

The Appleton Fire Department said the fire happened at the Copper Leaf Hotel located in Appleton. The hotel was evacuated by the time crews arrived.

According to the department, the fire started in one of the hotel dryers in the basement laundry area.

Crews said they brought the fire under control within 10 minutes. They said the hotel's properly working sprinkler system assisted in the extinguishing of the fire.

The fire is under investigation and a cause has not yet been determined.

No further information has been released at this time.

I own too many T-shirts. Hand-me-downs, concert tees, jerseys, novelty finds from Goodwill, shirts from breweries, shirts enthusiastically fired out of cannons, shirts ironically or earnestly supporting a political candidate, shirts that I have no memory of acquiring in the first place. I find it difficult to part with T-shirts for some reason, awakening my latent hoarder tendencies as I fabricate reasons to keep dozens of them buried in the bottom of a dresser drawer. When I find a shirt that’s way too big, or has a 3-year-old stain on it, or has found some other reason to fall out of rotation, I’ll earnestly tell my wife, “I should save this for when I paint.” I don’t paint. I don’t know the last time I’ve painted (walls, watercolors, anything) and I certainly have no shortage of T-shirts I could wear for such an endeavor.

That being said, as I’ve adjusted to work-from-home life, I’ve become a little more particular about what I’m wearing to “the office” (the room around the corner from our kitchen). I’m not wearing button-downs and jeans, but I’ve found it’s difficult to get into Work Mode wearing an old graphic tee that I received in exchange for writing my email on a clipboard at an art fair. I have shirts in two different styles for Tomorrows Laundry: the “Classic,” which is a little more fitted, and then the “Modern,” which is a boxier fit. All the shirts are muted colors, with some of my favorites being granite grey, rose taupe, and sagebrush. They’re also 100% cotton and very soft. I don’t love it when cotton T-shirts are too thin, especially because they tend to wrinkle easily in a short amount of time. The Tomorrows Laundry shirts kept wrinkles at bay, and looked pretty much as good in the morning as they did when I was signing off in the evening. Plus, they’re pre-shrunk and machine-washable. The tees held up really well over time, which is probably their clearest signal of quality.

I’ve started wearing Tomorrows Laundry shirts so frequently that it’s probably time to dig through my overstuffed dresser and get some bags ready to donate. Unless of course I'm inspired to finally pick up that paintbrush, in which case...

Nearly two thirds of Europeans (63%) continue to wash at 40°C or higher, despite over a decade of being encouraged to wash clothes at 30°C or lower, according to a new study from Electrolux. Oddly, the Swedish appliance giant is now calling for people to use their appliances less.

Vanessa Butani, head of sustainability for Electrolux Europe, has recently joined the group and is on a mission to help people change the way they wash their clothes. Which currently isn’t good enough, for clothes nor the planet, the white paper “The Truth about Laundry” unveils.

Each year, a 40°C wash releases 27.2Kg of CO2 equivalent more than a 30°C wash. But data from 12 European countries (including Italy, UK and Germany) shows that people do their laundry with nearly 1 billion 40°C washes a week.

“What our report shows is that people do care about their clothes and the vast majority recognise there are environmental benefits to making their clothes last longer,” said Butani. “If we can educate and encourage people to take small but significant steps to update their laundry practices, the savings will be significant.”

Young people are much more aware of their environmental impact. Across Europe, 45% of adults aged 18 to 34 wash their clothes at 30°C, versus only 31% of 45 to 54 year olds and only 28% of people over 55.

Spain is the most virtuous country, with 76% of adults opting to wash at 30°C and lower., followed by Italy (52%), France and the UK (both at 49%). Conversely, 88% of Fins, 85% of Swedes and 80% of Norwegians wash at 40°C and above.

Nearly half of the respondents said that they weren’t confident their laundry would be clean, if washed at a lower temperature. COVID-19 didn’t make the issue easy, of course. Besides, over half of them are unaware of a link between washing at lower temperatures and making clothes last longer.

The study also reveals the detrimental impact of using powder detergent on the environment. As it produces an additional 29.6kg of CO2 per appliance each year, switching to liquid would also potentially deliver the equivalent of removing over 845,000 cars from the road.

Yet, the report suggests that the narrative should change entirely and focus on the appeal of long-lasting clothes rather than costs and energy. Extending clothing life could be the answer to bringing about positive change.

In fact, 86% of Europeans believe making clothes last longer is better for the environment and 83% care about extending the life of clothes. Agreement was highest in Finland and the UK (94%), in comparison with  a percentage in marked contrast to France where only 67% of adults agreed. The lowest of all countries analysed, France, for many the birthplace of fashion, also ranked the lowest in terms of their relationship with clothes. Only 40% of adults in France care about increasing clothing life compared to 83% across the rest of Europe.

Suspicious car: Columbia Road

Police went to Olmsted Laundromat about an unoccupied car that was parked near the business at 3:11 a.m. Feb. 22. They found the driver in the car sleeping behind its wheel.

The man told police he was just sleeping while waiting for his laundry to finish. Once his laundry was done, the man collected his clothes and drove away.

Drunken driving: Columbia Road

A motorist called police at 11:10 p.m. Feb. 20 to say that he was following a possible drunken driver who was swerving all over the roadway heading south. Police found the car stopped in a parking lot on Columbia Road.

The motorist began driving away, but officers stopped the car a short distance away. They noticed a strong smell of alcohol and marijuana on the driver while talking with her.

After a short investigation, they determined that she was drunk while driving the car. She was arrested. Her breath sample registered a .306 BAC, which is 3 1/2 times the legal limit. She was released to a sober friend.

Suspicious person: Schady Road

Police received a call at 1:07 a.m. Feb. 21 that a man was knocking on the door of a vacant home. They found the man in the driveway.

He said he knew the house was unoccupied, but said his friend was working on it. The friend owed him money. The man also said his phone was dead and that he was nearly out of gas.

The man’s story apparently checked out OK. Police gave him a courtesy ride to Lorain Road.

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. — In 1931, the story goes, a cowboy traveling through northwest Wyoming saw Teressa Martin outside doing laundry.

The cowboy, on horseback, approached Teressa and asked if she would be kind enough to do his laundry. The interaction gave Teressa and her husband, Al, the idea to start a laundry service, and Teton Laundry was born.

The business primarily did personal laundry for early Jackson Hole households. Sheets, towels, shirts and jeans filled those early washtubs. Soon dude ranches were sending their dirty linens to Teton Laundry.

Located at the southern gate to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, small motels began to sprout up to serve the summer tourism industry, their primary business.

The laundry and linen service has undergone many changes since 1931. Today, Mark Barron owns the company known as High Country Linen Service, and its most recent renovation took place in 2018.

American Laundry News spent some time asking Barron about the service. In the conclusion, he talks about the operation in terms of timeliness, quality, uniqueness, success and plans for the future.

Our valued customers, a good friend and equipment supplier Kerry Bengtson and American Laundry Machinery, the local bank, and our community supported us at every turn and helped turn a nightmare into a success that saved all our staff’s jobs. The recent Vega Systems USA rebuild was accomplished while still operating.

We also infused some new talent into our leadership team and reorganized for optimal performance and accountability, improved service and increased sales.

What’s in the future for the company?

I purchased the adjacent property in January 2020 for expansion and additional employee housing. During the early months of the pandemic, we remodeled the new commercial space and moved our Janitor & Cleaning Supplies store into this more prominent location, gutted the old store, and moved our offices into this brand-new space and gutted the old office space and adjacent supplies storage to create about 5,000 square feet of linen storage and delivery staging.

These improvements made our plant even more productive. Our store sales increased 20%, and our office space looks more professional and provides improved communication between administration, sales and service.
