In the 1930s, David “Dick” Byerly worked for Procter & Gamble as a scientist.
He was “quietly working on a cleaning agent called Product X, that he believed had great potential to revolutionize how families washed clothes.”
His goal was to create a detergent that would clean better than anything else available. After seven years, his project was cancelled. But, in his spare time he still worked on it.
“After 14 years he finally created a prototype product that was quickly named Tide. Tide launched in 1946 and was called The Washday Miracle. Since 1949, Tide has been the leading laundry detergent in the U.S.” according to Procter & Gamble.
Tide detergent is celebrating its 75th birthday this year.
“Since its inception, Tide has helped shape American history with innovation driven in direct response to its customer’s needs and has a proud history of ‘firsts’ including: first liquid detergent, first detergent with bleach, and the first Tide To Go Pen to name a few. In fact, their breakthrough science in Tide Coldwater was fine-tuned for over a decade, leading to more breakthrough innovations that were eventually applied across all forms and variants.”
“Tide was created because one scientist believed there was a great potential to revolutionize how families washed clothes. For the last 75 years, we have kept that mentality and strive to create products with people in mind. We are always looking for ways to help how families wash and anticipate their washing needs,” said Amy Krehbiel, brand VP of North American laundry for Procter & Gamble.
