Denver Parks and Recreation is teaming with the nonprofit Showers For All to provide free showers and laundry services for homeless people.
Showers For All will bring its mobile shower and laundry trailer to Denver’s Civic Center Park every Monday and Thursday for the rest of June, the city announced. The trailer will be open for use from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
“(We) deliver a critical, and often forgotten, service to those struggling with homelessness and poverty,” Showers For All said in a release. “The lack of shower/laundry facilities for people in need is a health crisis. But we know this simple service can deliver big results.”
The nonprofit said providing shower and laundry services prevents insect infestations, harmful skin conditions caused by dirty clothes and toxic shock syndrome among women during menstrual cycles.
Providing cleanliness also helps homeless residents seeking jobs and improves an individual’s mental health and sense of worth, Showers For All said.
The mobile trailer will open in Civic Center Park on Monday. It features two full-service bathrooms and multiple washers and dryers.
Showers For All is an initiative of the Dignity Project, a Denver-based nonprofit aiming to empower the journey away from homelessness. Showers For All is funded by individual donations that can be made by at showersforall.org.
